Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

DJ Dixon and the Cardinals put away Albertus Magnus in 2-1 overtime victory

MIDDLETOWN, CT. – Senior Captain DJ Dixon shouldered the Wesleyan men's ice hockey team to a 2-1 overtime victory over Albertus Magnus College on Tuesday afternoon after scoring the game's opening goal late in the third period before sending the overtime game-winning puck top shelf.

Tied up at one with five minutes on the clock for three-on-three overtime hockey, the Cardinals (5-10-1 overall) went to work holding the Falcons (12-9-0 overall) in their own territory. With just under four minutes on the clock, Jack Bosco '26 was sent to backup Dixon and Danny Judge '26 as the puck was dumped down over the Cardinals blueline. Dixon was tripped up at center ice attempting to bring the puck back down to the goal, but Bosco was able to corral the puck down to the goal line and back to Judge. Dixon collected Judge's cross-ice pass, sending the puck over the shoulder of Falcon's goaltender Logan Bateman to send the Cardinals home with a win.

Both the Cardinals and the Falcons were held scoreless for the first two periods of play with the Falcons outshooting the Cardinals 38-18 overall, but Dixon opened the scoring late in the third period on the power play. With the Falcons down a man on a tripping minor, the play started with Patrick Morrissey '25 setting up Owen Sweet '25 for an initial shot on goal out above the left faceoff circle. Lost in a scrum in front of Bateman, the puck is kicked out to a waiting Dixon who slashes the puck back over the line, just inside the post.

William Lavigne scored the game-tying goal for the Falcons two and a half minutes after Dixon's first goal. Tim Manning, down low at the goal line, sent the puck back to Lavigne who was out center of Cardinals goaltender Marc Smith '24 and scored with a high shot.

Dixon also led all Cardinals from the faceoff, winning seven draws.

Smith finished the afternoon in goal with 37 saves to Bateman's 16 saves.

The Cardinals return to action on Friday, Jan. 26, when they head to Amherst for a 7 p.m. NESCAC puck drop.
