No. 7 Cardinals Blank Rhode Island in 5-0 Road Conquest

PROVIDENCE, RI. – It was a thrilling October conquest for the No. 7 Wesleyan women's soccer team on Tuesday night as they traveled to Rhode Island College for their final non-conference matchup of the regular season. Coming away with a 5-0 shutout to remain undefeated, five separate scorers found the back of the net at Rhode Island's Alumni Stadium.

Jumping four spots in the national rankings, the undefeated Cardinals (11-0-2 overall, 6-0-2 NESCAC) jetted to a quick start, holding heavy possession over the Anchorwomen (6-8-2 overall) with three shots to open the action. That early possession was dominated by senior forward Katie O'Connell '25 with near constant contact with the ball down the near line. Riley Buehler '26 had the earliest scoring chance for the Cardinals with a header that reached just wide of the goal through the left post. As the Cardinals were rolling with a range of offensive power, the Cardinals created several wide attempts on goal from O'Connell and Lily Jebijian '26.

The strongest offensive push from the Anchorwomen came from Amber Almeida with a handful of rushes on Juliette Vemmer '25, but the Cardinals defense was not allowing the ball past the midfield on too many occasions. Foreshadowing her own goal later in the half, Kerenza Leahey's '27 header attempt in the 27th minute was punched up and over the crossbar by Nicole Nunes. The Cardinals again had another one-two punch scoring attempt at the 15-minute mark as Leahey rocketed a quick shot from out above, forcing Nunes to fall to her left before making the rebounded save on Stefanie Stoj '26.

Nunes and the Anchorwomen's defense were up for the challenge given the number of shots on high possession, but the Cardinals finally answered with a Meredith Feiner '28 goal from high center at 37:51. As the Cardinals once again made their way inside the Anchorwomen's defense, Brianna Garcia '28 settled the ball down above the right edge of the box and drove the play in, making the high pass to Feiner from the top of the box. On the goal line, Feiner headed the ball over the shoulder of Nunes.

Never wanting to enter the half with just one goal on the books, Leahey's shot finally hit its mark at 42:20. Jumpstarting the motion from the Cardinals' own zone, Gabriella Freeman '28 directed the ball over the midfield line on her own, leading the offense back down the field as she found Feiner. Leahey caught Feiner's pass out dead center as her right foot shot angled the ball into the left ninety.

Prior to the end of the first half, the Cardinals had two goal line saves off a corner kick, Waverly Meyers '26 snagging the first attempt on a header before Sheridan Snow '28 tried to score on the rebound.

Mirroring the first 45 minutes, the second half witnessed three more goals from the Cardinals while Vemmer saw very little of the Anchorwomen in the Cardinals goal. Juliette Sullivan's '27 first shot of the second half from inside the box was stopped on a diving save by Nunes quite a distance from the goal line. Sullivan's second attempt on Nunes was a goal at 66:54. Receiving the ball from Buehler just inside the box on the left-hand side, Sullivan sent the ball to Feiner on the far goal line, who in turn found Sullivan again for the left corner goal.

Scoring her first goal of the season, Meyers was up next for the Cardinals at 74:32. With Kerenza Leahey taking the awarded corner for the Cardinals, Leahey's shot landed on the heel of Meyers at the right post and angled behind Nunes. In another first, Brooke Goodwin '27 scored her first-career goal as a Cardinal at 77:45 with the final goal of the night. Goodwin hit a high shot from out above the box from Beatrix Delaney '27, Goodwin's ball squeezing between the glove of Nunes and the crossbar.

As the Cardinals outshot the Anchorwomen 38-1, Leahey led the Cardinals with a goal, assist, and four shots on goal. Vemmer earned her second win of the season, a second shutout, as she finished the evening with just one save in goal. Nunes, facing 22 shots on goal, made 16 saves for the Anchorwomen.

The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, Oct. 26, to celebrate their senior class with a NESCAC matchup against Colby College in their final regular season home game at 11 a.m.
