Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Late Comeback Bid Falls Short as No. 12 Field Hockey Falls to No. 13 Amherst, 2-1

AMHERST, Mass. – Two early goals proved enough for No. 13 Amherst in the end as the No. 12 ranked Wesleyan field hockey team suffered a 2-1 defeat to the Mammoths on Saturday afternoon from Hill Field. Wesleyan (7-3, 2-3 NESCAC) sees their two-game win streak end and the Mammoths (6-4, 2-4 NESCAC) pick up just their second win in the last five games.

Chloe Agopian got Amherst on the scoreboard first just four minutes into the match. Maya Harrington hit the past the Cardinals' defensive line to find Agopian open for a 1-on-1 against Wesleyan goalkeeper Audrey Pace '26. Agopian scooped the ball past Pace into the lower left corner to make it 1-0.

Just two minutes later, Sam Maynard made it 2-0 Amherst as she dribbled into the circle, through the Wesleyan defense, before firing the ball into the center of the cage.

Defenses dominated the remainder of the first half as just three penalty corners and only five attempted shots were taken between the two sides.

Amherst could have very easily added to their lead in the third quarter, forcing Pace into making five saves in the frame.

Pace's brilliance in the frame loomed large as Wesleyan made it a 2-1 game with just 27 seconds left. After two yellow cards dropped Amherst down to just eight field players, Georgia Adams' 26 slotted a pass to her left from deep inside the circle to find Leila Feldman '28 in front of goal who slotted in her second career tally.

With plenty of time remaining and Amherst still dealing with two players on yellow cards, a frantic final 10 seconds saw Wesleyan awarded four penalty corners. The first chance didn't see a shot attempt, as Amherst was whistled for another foul, but the next two saw shots from Helen Deretchin '25, Imani Ochieng '25, and Adams all turned aside by Grace Puchalski. Then on the fourth corner, a pass at the top of the circle was intercepted by Harrington and Amherst held on for the win.

Seven of Wesleyan's 10 shots in the contest came in the fourth quarter. Wesleyan amassed eight penalty corners compared to four for Amherst. The Mammoths were whistled for three green cards and two yellow's in the course of the game, compared to just one green card for Wesleyan.

Next up for the Cardinals is a trip to Trinity on Wednesday for a 6 PM start.
