No. 4 Cardinals Will Face SUNY Brockport in NCAA First Round for the First Time

MIDDLETOWN, CT. - Entering the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight year on an at-large bid, the No. 4 Wesleyan women's soccer team travels to the University of Scranton for the 2024 NCAA First Round where they will meet SUNY Brockport for the first time ever on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 3 p.m. at Scranton's Weiss Field. A win on Saturday will match Wesleyan with the winner of the University of Scranton and Marywood University match, to be held prior at 1 p.m.

Undefeated through the regular season, the Cardinals entered the NESCAC Championship having claimed the top seed for the first time in program history. A thrilling double overtime win over No. 8 Conn., the goal coming off the foot of Juliette Sullivan '27, advanced the Cardinals to the NESCAC semifinal round where they suffered their first loss of the season to No. 6 Colby in a 3-2 upset.

Despite an early exit from the conference tournament, the 13-1-3 Cardinals (7-0-3 NESCAC) saw a record six players earn All-NESCAC selections as they pocketed Coaching Staff of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and Defensive Player of the Year. Against ranked opponents this season, the Cardinals are 2-0-2 as the NESCAC consistently dominates the national rankings.

Head coach Eva Meredith and her staff will see Rookie of the Year Sheridan Snow '28 in the starting lineup as part of the Cardinals' much talked about defensive squad. Snow led the team in minutes this season, collecting two goals as she and the defense allowed only five goals prior to the conference semifinal. Caty Clements '25 joins Snow in the back lineup as the post-season veteran for the Cardinals. Clements has been crucial to the Cardinals 65 allowed shots on goal while scoring two game-winning penalty kicks.

Earning the NESCAC's Defensive Player of the Year honor, goalkeeper Molly Brumbach '26 enters the tournament as the NESCAC's best goalkeeper in two years running. Brumbach is 11-1-3 in 15 starts, racking up a career-high 10 shutouts. Making 58 saves on 111 shots faced, Brumbach has recorded a standing .869 save percentage and .54 goals against average.

SUNY Brockport Scouting

Meeting the Cardinals for the first time ever, the Golden Eagles ran the Empire 8 conference as the top seed with a 10-1 conference record while going 15-1-2 overall. The Eagles' lone loss came at the hands of St. John Fisher, 2-0, on Oct. 12. The Eagles opened the season with an 11-game winning streak prior to the game against St. John Fisher.

Cruising past Elmira in the first round, 1-0, with a second half goal, the Eagles fell in the Empire 8 semifinal round to Nazareth in penalty kicks, 0-0 (7-6). Even with an early exit similar to the Cardinals, the Eagles picked up the Empire 8's Coaching Staff of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, and Offensive Player of the Year honors.

Mike Idland and his staff coached Jaylah Cossin to 11 goals and eight assists for 30 points to earn Offensive Player of the Year. Cossin ranks first in the Empire 8 in goals and points. Defensive Player of the Year went to Lyndsey Miller as the Eagles' defense allowed only four goals in 2024. Goalkeeper Madline McCrosson is 10-1-1 on the season, making 47 saves on 68 shots faced for a .844 save percentage.  The Eagles are outscoring opponents 51-4.

University of Scranton Scouting

The host of this weekend's opening round for the Cardinals' bracket, the Royals enter the tournament as the winner of the Landmark Conference with a 17-1-2 overall record and perfect 9-0 record in the conference. The Royals' only loss this season came by way of No. 16 NYU, 1-0, on Oct. 1. Since Oct. 1, the Royals have won 10 in a row and have not allowed a goal since Lycoming scored two on Oct. 9.

Earning the top seed in the Landmark, the Royals beat Moravian in the quarterfinal with a 1-0 final score before advancing to beat Drew, 2-0 in the semifinal. Facing Lycoming in the final, the Royals won the Landmark with a 3-0 shutout. The Royals picked up Coaching Staff of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and Offensive Player of the Year.

Colleen Pivirotto and her staff saw Niamh Healy win her third Player of the Year accolade, scoring 14 goals and four assists for 32 points. Healy notched eight game-winning goals this season. Aileen Carr was the Landmark Rookie of the Year. Carr and the Royals defense allowed only six goals this season on goalkeeper Nicole Olson. Olson started all 20 games for the Royals, going 17-1-2 with 12 shutouts overall. On 100 shots, Olson made 47 saves for a .872 save percentage.

Marywood University

Going 15-3-2 overall with a 5-0-1 record in the Atlantic East, the Pacers will face Scranton on the heels of a 10-game winning streak. The Pacers' three losses were dealt by Hartwick, Stockton, and Eastern. The Pacers have not allowed a goal since the loss to Eastern.

Earning the Atlantic East's top tournament berth, the Pacers ran down Immaculata in the semifinal, 4-0, before defeating Marymount, 2-0, for the Atlantic East title. Leading scorer Josephine Sorce won Offensive Player of the Year, posting 15 goals and seven assists for 44 points. Britlyn Higgins won Defensive Player of the Year; the defense allowed only four goals against through 20 games.

Head coach Richard Owens kept an even playing field for the goalkeepers this season, both Genevieve Morrison and Jenna Orr making 10 starts. Morrison is 10-2-1 with a .885 save percentage, 23 saves on 47 shots. Orr finished the season 5-1-1 with a .958 save percentage, face 57 shots for 23 saves.
