Women’s Ice Hockey Shut Out at No. 3 Middlebury, 6-0

MIDDLEBURY, VT. – The Wesleyan women's ice hockey team fell in conference action on Saturday afternoon as they were shutout by No. 3 Middlebury, 6-0, from Middlebury's Kenyon Arena.

Beginning the action from the opening puck drop, the Panthers picked up right where they left off the night before with a continuous attack on the Cardinals' defense. The Cardinals managed four shots on goal in the first period while holding the Panthers for three quarters of the opening period but were forced to the penalty kill with five minutes remaining. Striking at 14:47, the Panthers notched their first goal of the game, hitting goaltender Sami Smith over the left shoulder from the circle.

Building on the momentum of the first period goal, the Panthers dominated the second period and tallied a second goal at 12:40. Maintaining possession through a scrum in front of Smith, Jordan Hower collects a rebounded save and was able to stuff the puck over the line.

Less than a minute into the final period the Panthers recorded their third goal of the afternoon, Olivia Gordan scoring on a wrap-around play, shoving the puck under Smith's skate as she was coming around the left post.

With the Cardinals down a man after a hooking call, Kate Flynn scored the second power-play goal of the game at 9:50. Sabrina Kim drove the puck around the back of the net, Flynn was waiting at the left post. Two minutes later Olivia McManus scored the fifth goal for the Panthers, their third even strength of the game. The puck was tipped in at the line. A minute later Cece Zeigler tipped in a sixth puck.

Sam Galanek '26 and Olivia Rubinstein '27 led the team in shots on goal with two apiece. Aiko Sims made three blocks in front of Smith, a team high for the afternoon. In net, Smith finished the afternoon with 41 saves, a career high as a Cardinal.

The Cardinals return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 26, when they travel to Salve Regina with puck drop at 7:30 p.m.
