MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – it was raining three-pointers for the No. 16 ranked Wesleyan men's basketball team who hit 17 from long range in a convincing 94-65 win over Widener on Friday afternoon from the campus of Barry University in Florida. Wesleyan heads back home with two wins in just over 24 hours, improving to 11-0 on the season, matching the team's second-best start to a season in team history.
Wesleyan could not miss from long range, hitting 11 of their 17 three-point makes in the first half alone as the Cardinals combined to go 11-for-20 (55 percent) from deep in the opening 20 minutes of play. Of the Cardinals' 17 total shots made in the first half, 11 came from behind the three-point line. Wesleyan finished with 17 made three-pointers, setting a new season-high and representing the most made three's in a game since the Cardinals hit a team record 20 against Purchase back on November 17, 2021.
Six Cardinals had at least two three-pointers in the 29-point win, while the pairing of
Nicky Johnson '25 (5-7 3FG) and
Ben Lyttle '27 (3-3 3FG) combined to go 8-for-10 from long range. Johnson's five three-point makes ties his career-high while he totaled a season-high 23 points in the win to go along with four rebounds and three assists. Lyttle went 6-for-7 from the floor while grabbing five offensive rebounds in just 20 minutes, finishing the game with 17 points and eight rebounds.
Jackson Cormier '26 set the tone with a three-pointer on the first possession of the game. Wesleyan went on to score 12 unanswered points in a span of just two minutes, as Johnson and Lyttle both hit two three-pointers in the 12-0 run, giving the Cardinals an 18-7 lead just 4:59 into play.
Zach Wolinski '28 had his turn connecting from deep before Wesleyan hit Widener with another extended run, this time turning a 13-point lead into a 23-point advantage thanks to a 12-2 run capped by a
Charlie Moore '27 three-pointer with 4:54 left in the first half. That 23-point lead was the biggest of the half for the Cardinals who went into the halftime break leading 48-26.
It took the Cardinals only two minutes to build a 30-point lead as Wesleyan scored 11 unanswered points to open the second half. The lead swelled to as many as 33 points in the second half wherein the Cardinals shot over 50 percent from the floor, scoring 46 points to finish off the win with a season-high point total, eclipsing the 93 points scored at Lasell back on December 5.
Twelve Cardinals in total netted at least one basket in the win.
Shane Regan '25 led a contingent of three Cardinals with eight points each as the senior added seven rebounds and five assists. Cormier and Moore joined Regan with eight points each.
Wesleyan thoroughly dominated the rebounding once again, sporting a +26 edge in rebounding margin (46-20) including a 17-5 advantage in offensive rebounds. Incredibly, Wesleyan held Widener to 0 second chance points in the game while the Cardinals finished with 26.
The Cardinals return to action on Monday, December 30 with a trip to Yeshiva for a 7:30 PM tip.
