Eight Cardinals Place, CJ Shea Lands Another Title, Leading Wrestling to Second Place at RIT

Cardinals head into the dual match season flying high with a successful fall campaign

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Eight Cardinals placed on Saturday in an all-around terrific showing from the Wesleyan wrestling team who took second place out of 14 teams competing at the RIT Invitational. CJ Shea '25 won the 165-lb bracket while Andrew Maiorini '25 (174) and Aris Dashiell '25 (197) were runners-up in their respective weight class. Shea continued to roll in his senior year, picking up another title at 165, giving him three first place results in three fall tournaments. Shea opened with a 17-1 tech fall win over Sam Partain of John Carroll and followed with the same scoreline in his round of 16 bout with Justin Sweeney of Case Western. Now in the quarterfinal round, Shea landed a 5-2 decision win of Fisher Stites of Williams before he defeated Jack Lamson of RIT in the semifinals in a 7-2 decision. The final saw Shea battle against Marty Landes of Case Western and Shea did just enough to take a 4-2 decision victory, completing an undefeated fall season.

Coming in as the #2 seed in the 174 flight, Maiorini backed that up with a trip to the final on Saturday. After opening with a 17-0 tech fall win, Maiorini was locked in a battle with Kyle Jacobs of RIT before ultimately coming out on top in a 7-5 decision win. The senior dominated Konnor Tubin of Penn State Behrand, landing a 14-3 major decision victory, setting the stage for a semifinal bout with Case Western's Chase Crutchley that needed overtime to determine a winner. In that extra period, Maiorini landed a decisive takedown to win 4-1, and advance to the final where he was defeated by the top seed Aiden Ashburn of John Carroll.

Dashiell dominated in the early rounds at 197, landing a pin in 22 seconds in his opening round bout before defeating Connor Byers of Norwich 16-0. In the quarterfinal round, Dashiell toppled Nolan Fenton 8-3 before an epic clash with top seed Jesse Kanatzar of John Carroll that ended in a 7-6 decision win for Dashiell. Wrestling in the final against Anthony Cascen of Oswego State, Dashiell settled for second place as Cascen did enough to claim a 4-2 decision win.

Hayden Myers '27 competed at 141 and was explosive in the early going, landing an opening round 15-0 tech fall followed by a 23-6 tech fall and pinfall in 1:20. Suddenly in the semifinal round, Myers was undone by the #2 seed Jackson Maby of Oneonta State but the Wesleyan sophomore regrouped in the third place match, taking down Tylor Subbs of Williams with a pin in 1:20.

Other placers on the day for Wesleyan included Joe Colon '25 at 184 as the senior battled in the consolation flight after a second round defeat in the winner's bracket. Colon landed back-to-back pins before a 12-3 major decision victory put him through and into another round. Wrestling against Simon Taraksa, who earlier in the day defeated top seed Bear Hogan of John Carroll, Colon did enough to win a high-scoring 18-16 decision victory. Colon was then unable to wrestle in the third place bout as he had reached his daily match limit, which is universally set at six matches for each wrestler.

Max Martinez '25 and Ike Guttentag '26 had similar runs in their respective weight classes. Martinez landed a pair of wins in the winner's bracket at 133 before shaking off a loss to land three straight wins in the consolation flight, advancing to the third place bout that he could not compete in (daily match limit reached). Guttentag landed consecutive pins in the winner's flight at 149 before roaring back with three commending wins in the consolation bracket including one by pinfall, a 18-8 major decision, and 17-1 tech fall. He also could not compete in the third place bout (daily match limit reached).

The final placer on the day saw Ronnie Christolin '28 reach the quarterfinal stage of the main draw at 157, scoring wins by pin (1:23) and tech fall (20-5) before falling to the top seed Peter Kane of Williams. Christolin responded with a 14-3 major decision win in the consolation flight before a 5-2 decision win was followed by an 8-5 decision loss that nearly saw the first-year advance to the third place bout.

Wesleyan will enjoy a month-long break before returning to action on Saturday, January 11 with a trip to WPI for the start of the dual match season.
