WILLIAMSTOWN, MA. – It was a two-point night for everyone on the first line for the Wesleyan men's ice hockey team as
DJ Dixon '24 tallied two goals on the evening in a 5-3 loss to Williams College on Saturday afternoon while
Owen Sweet '25 and
Ethan Davidson '26 on the wings recorded two assists each from Williams' Lansing Chapman Rink.
Jack Sabre opened the scoring for the Ephs (7-12-1 overall, 4-9-1 NESCAC), tallying the first goal of the game just under two minutes after the opening puck drop. The Cardinals (5-14-1 overall, 3-10-1 NESCAC) responded quickly, and
DJ Dixon tied the game up at one on a man-up opportunity as the Ephs were called for contact with a five-minute major. Sweet gained possession of the puck from
Patrick Morrissey '25 at the left boards and brought the puck out center at the top of the Cardinals' power play unit. Sweet then sent the puck down low for Dixon who was skating across the goal and was able to tap the puck over the line at 3:32. Dixon now leads the Cardinals with eight goals.
The Cardinals picked up their first lead of the game at 12:28 of the second period when
Connor Sutherland '27 put one in the back of the net on another power play opportunity. With the Ephs down a man on a tripping penalty, Sutherland's goal starts with Sweet at the left point sending the puck down the boards for Davidson at the goal line. Davidson found Sutherland inside the left circle before Sutherland fell to one knee for the one-timer goal into the right corner.
Entering the third period with a one-goal lead, the Ephs bested the Cardinals defense and posted three goals from Trevor O'Brien, Owen Stadheim, and Fasal Al-Saif before Dixon was able to score the third goal of the afternoon for the Cardinals. Out at the line, Davidson made the cross-ice pass to Morrissey out at the right boards before Morrissey shot the puck into the goal front crowd for Dixon out above the left post. Logan Valkama put away the final goal for the Ephs.
Dixon led all Cardinals from the faceoff circle with 14 draw wins. In goal for the Cardinals,
Marc Smith '24 finished the afternoon with 27 saves.
In net for the Ephs, Cal Sandquist made 24 saves.
The Cardinals return home on Friday, Feb. 9, when they host Bowdoin in NESCAC action beginning at 7 p.m.
