Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Men’s ice hockey defeated by Bowdoin, 4-1

MIDDLETOWN, CT. – Led by sophomore forward Jack Marottolo '26 with a power play goal, the Wesleyan men's ice hockey team fell in NESCAC action, 4-1, to Bowdoin College on Friday night from Spurrier-Snyder Arena.

The Bears (13-4-4 overall, 9-2-4 NESCAC) struck early in the game in just under five minutes of play as Mattie Wierl net a short-handed goal as the Cardinals (5-15-1 overall, 3-11-1 NESCAC) were awarded the power play, having been called for a hooking minor. The Bears led into the second period with the one goal lead.

Inside the 11-minute mark of the second period, Richard Davis almost gave the Bears a two-goal lead after his shot from the blue line danced behind Erik Voloshin '24 and over the line. Voloshin was unable to make the save as he was tangled up with another player and the goal was disallowed.

The Cardinals answered at 8:08 as Marottolo notched his third of the season with the Cardinals on the man advantage. With the Bears called for boarding, Daniel Lurie '26 set up Marottolo's goal after gaining possession at the top of the unit and skating the puck down to the goal line. Lurie took the initial shot on Alex Kozic, but Kozic was able to make the save before Marottolo picked the rebound from out center and swatted the puck over the line to tie the game up at one.

Wierl's goal at 14:36 of the third period gave the Bears the one-goal lead, but with Voloshin pulled for the extra attacker, Jesse Lycan the first empty-net goal before Luke Wheeler scored a short-handed empty-net goal in the final minute of the game.

Jack Bosco '26 led all Cardinals with eight shots on goal as the Cardinals outshot the Bears 33-29. DJ Dixon '24 led from the faceoff with 12 draw wins.

In goal, Voloshin finished the evening with 25 saves. Kozic ended the game with 32 saves for the Bears.

The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, Feb. 10, when they host Colby College with puck drop at 3 p.m.
