MIDDLETOWN, CT. – Tied up at one with a minute and a half remaining in regulation,
Caroline Mezias '25 net the game-winning goal to lift the Wesleyan women's hockey team over No. 6 Middlebury, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon from Wesleyan's Spurrier-Snyder Arena.
After beating Middlebury (10-5-3 overall, 7-3-2 NESCAC) on Friday night, today's victory clinched the program's first sweep of a ranked opponent. The Cardinals (11-6-3 overall, 6-4-2 NESCAC) now have four wins over ranked opponents in their last five games.
Brigitte Goeler-Slough '23 opened the scoring for the Cardinals at 8:10 of the first period with a power play goal as the Panthers were called for tripping. Out at the right circle,
Mairead Kennedy '24 sent the puck back and out to the line where
Jenna Stevens '24 was waiting to fire on goal. Goeler-Slough gets the final deflection for the goal. Three minutes later
Dylan Green '26 gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead heading into the second period.
With the Cardinals down a player on an interference call, Kate Flynn broke the scoring and gave the Panthers their first goal of the afternoon. Raia Schluter tied the game up at two before time ran out on the second period.
Jumpstarting Mezias' goal with less than two minutes remaining,
Caroline Kee '26 picked a Panthers turnover below the Cardinals' own line before rushing the Panthers' zone up the right boards. Kee shot a heavy puck on goal but Panthers goaltender Sophia Merageas was able to make the save before Mezias snagged the rebound and buried the final Cardinals goal at the left post.
Kee led all Cardinals from the faceoff circle with eight draw wins.
In goal,
Rei Halloran '23 made 33 saves on the afternoon for the Cardinals. Merageas finished with 25 saves.
The Cardinals return to action on Friday, Feb. 9, when they travel to Colby for a 7 p.m. NESCAC matchup.
