Cardinals open Spring Break with 7-2 victory over No. 19 Case Western

SAN ANTONIO, TX – After posting two sweeps prior to their Spring Break trip to San Antonio, TX, the No. 5 Wesleyan women's tennis team opened the trip with a 7-2 win over No. 19 Case Western Reserve University on Tuesday morning from the Butch Newman Tennis Center.

Now 3-0 to start the spring season, Renna Mohsen-Breen '25 and Lane Durkin '27 kicked off the scoring for the Cardinals in the No. 3 doubles spot as they defeated Anna Kan and Pallavi Goculdas with a quick 8-2 win. Jackie Soloveychik '27 and Leila Epstein '26 made work of Radha Patel and Katalina Wang as they also came away with a 8-2 win as the No. 2 pairing. The Spartans earned their first point as Hannah Kassaie and Lily McCloskey handed a loss to Caitlyn Ferrante '24 and Sarah Youngberg '26, 8-3.

Ferrante and Youngberg both rallied back during singles play as Ferrante finished off Kassaie in a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1 as Youngberg in the No. 2 spot dealt McClosky a 6-2, 6-4 defeat. Soloveychik, the sixth point for the Cardinals at No. 4, cleared Kan in a 6-3, 6-4 win. Mohsen-Breen wasted no time in defeating Asha Shukla with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 6 to kick off singles play. The final point of the morning went to Durkin in the No. 5 spot as Durkin fell in the second set. Tallying a 6-2 first set, Patel came back with her own 6-4 win, but Durkin made a 10-3 final set comeback to finish off the match for the Cardinals.

The Spartans came away with one singles match victory as Wang defeated Epstein at No. 3, 6-3, 6-7, 9-11.

The Cardinals will return to action on Wednesday, March 13, when they face No. 22 Swarthmore in Austin, TX, beginning at 5 p.m. at the Austin Tennis Academy.
