No. 5 Cardinals Sweep No. 6 Amherst for the First Time in NESCAC Opener

AMHERST, MA. – Returning to the court to open the spring portion of the 2023-24 season, the No. 5 ranked Wesleyan women's tennis team, and four-time defending NESCAC Champions, swept No. 6 Amherst College in NESCAC action for the first time in program history, 9-0, on Saturday morning from the Amherst Tennis Courts.

RESULTS

Over the course of the NESCAC rivals' 47-year history, the Mammoths hold the win advantage at 36-10, but the Cardinals have won the last nine-consecutive matchups dating back to April of 2017.

Starting off the action in the first match of the season, the No. 2 doubles pairing of Jackie Soloveychik '27 and Leila Epstein '26 were the first to finish as they defeated Amy Cui and Katelyn Hart in a final 8-3 match win. Lane Durkin '27 and Renna Mohsen-Breen '25 at No. 3 finished off Greta Stechschulte and Sophie Diop with a 8-7 victory. The final doubles points came from the No. 1 pairing of Caitlyn Ferrante '24 and Sarah Youngberg '26 as the duo put away another 8-7 win for the Cardinals, beating out Deliala Friedman and Lily Dounchis.

Two Cardinals forced third set tiebreakers as both Ferrante and Epstein fell in their first sets to the Mammoths. Ferrante, facing Friedman, was down in set one as Friedman took an early 1-0 lead with a 6-4 win. However, Ferrante's comeback came with a 6-3 second set win before finishing off the match with a 1-0 tiebreaker victory. At No. 3, Epstein was also down as Dounchis took a 4-6 first set win. The second set went to Epstein 6-4 before roaring back with another 1-0 tiebreaker win.

Youngberg made quick work of Diop with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2. Soloveychik came away with another win at No. 4, defeating Stechschulte, 6-3, 6-2. In the No. 5 spot, Durkin finished Karolina Dobiecka with a 6-3, 6-1 match win. In the final singles position, Mohsen-Breen pulled away a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Maddie Swire.

The Cardinals return home to the John Wood Memorial Courts on Sunday, March 9, when they host Hamilton at 10 a.m., before heading to San Antonio, TX for Spring Break.
