CLINTON, N.Y. – The Wesleyan women's hockey team fell in NESCAC action on Saturday afternoon to Hamilton College, 5-0, in the second game of their weekend series on the road from Hamilton's Russell Sage Rink.
Swept by the Continentals in their first and final matchup of the regular season, the Cardinals (6-10-0 overall, 1-7-0 NESCAC) were able to hold the Continentals (6-8-1 overall, 2-5-1 NESCAC) with a soft edge in shot differential with a 28-25 margin overall, but the Continentals came alive in the second period.
In goal,
Sami Smith '27 recorded 20 saves for the Cardinals and held the Continentals without a goal through the first period. Facing eight shots through the first, the most the Continentals were able to snap throughout the game, Smith stonewalled the Continentals on two power play opportunities.
Scoring three unanswered goals to take a heavy lead through the second bout of action, the Continentals jumpstarted their scoring frenzy on the power play as the Cardinals were called for a slashing minor. Grace Puskar recorded the opening goal of the afternoon matchup and was followed by Ava Romano and Jamie Porter.
The Continentals put up another nine shots on Smith in the third period, resulting in goals four and five to close out the shutout. Abby Weiss and Gabby Martiniello were credited with the final goals.
The Cardinals return to action on Friday, Jan. 24, when they host Amherst in NESCAC action beginning at 7 p.m.
