MIDDLETOWN, CT. – Cruising to a herculean victory at home after a four-game string of losses, the Wesleyan women's hockey team ground out a 2-1 NESCAC upset over No. 3 ranked Amherst College on Friday night from Wesleyan's Spurrier-Snyder Arena.
Tonight's win over the Mammoths is the Cardinals' first victory over a ranked opponent since Feb. 17, when they defeated No. 9 Trinity in the final game of the 2023-24 regular season.
With five minutes of action underway on the clock, the Cardinals (7-10-0 overall, 2-7-0 NESCAC) took a one-goal lead over the Mammoths (11-3-1 overall, 4-2-1 NESCAC) by way of
Caroline Mezias' '25 first goal of the season. Mezias regained possession for the Cardinals in their own zone and moved to break the puck free and to the far boards in front of the penalty box. Faced with a straight shot to the Mammoths' goal, Mezias fought off a defender drove the puck in for a wrist shot over the right pad of Natalie Stott.
Holding off the Mammoths well into the second period, the Cardinals cushioned their lead with another goal as the defense continued to rally back again and again to better posture the scoring attempts. Forcing a turnover in the neutral zone,
Amelia Molin '27 gave way for
Cameron Devenney '27 to rush the puck up the near boards as
Dylan Green '26 filed up the center, catching Devenney's pass from out front and launching the puck over Stott's blocker.
Outshooting the Cardinals 38-20, the Mammoths finally made good on their offensive dominance and cut the lead in half in the third period. Nearing the halfway point of the final period, Gretchen Dann lifted the Mammoths onto the scoreboard unassisted.
Mezias led the Cardinals with three shots on goal and three blocked shots.
In goal for the Cardinals,
Jenna Guglielmi '27 finished the evening with 37 saves and earned the win. Stott completed 18 saves for the Mammoths.
The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, Jan. 25, to celebrate their eighth annual Pink Game in memory of Jackie Kilar's '19 mother, Joan Kilar, and all those affected by breast cancer, playing host to Amherst in the second game of their weekend series beginning at 3 p.m.
