COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Behind 11 placers, three finalists, and two champions in their respective weight class, the Wesleyan wrestling team amassed 168 team points to place first out of 14 teams at the Will Abele Invitational on Saturday hosted by Ursinus College. This marks the Cardinals' first tournament win since taking first place at the Doug Parker Invitational back on November 18, 2017.
The two champions on the day for Wesleyan included
Ike Guttentag '26 at 149 and
CJ Shea '25 at 165. It was one-way traffic all afternoon for Guttentag who landed four wins by tech fall to go along with a pin, coasting to the title including a 17-2 win in the final. Shea opened his day with two pinfall wins, followed by a tech fall and major decision before being tested in the title bout against Cameron Hines of Western New England, only to see Shea come away with an 8-4 decision victory.

Max Martinez '25 was the third finalist on the day for the Cardinals as the senior landed back-to-back pins to start before a 13-3 major decision win and 12-6 decision victory that sent him into the final before he fell to the top-seed Garrett Totten of TCNJ.

Depth won the day for Wesleyan who saw four Cardinals earn third place finishes, starting with
Chris Hong '27 at 125. Hong won 11-4 in the opening round before a 10-0 major decision victory followed by an 8-6 decision triumph. His run in the winner's bracket came to an end in the semifinal, falling 4-1 in sudden victory, before he managed to bounce back with a 15-8 win in the third place bout.

The 157 bracket saw a pair of Cardinals perform well, with
Shailen Savur '25 and
Ronnie Christolin '28 both advancing to the semifinal round. Christolin won two bouts by tech fall before an 8-4 decision win while Savur won by tech fall and a 13-6 decision in the winner's bracket before finishing in third place while Christolin took fourth.

Andrew Maiorini '25 went on a run to the semifinals of the winner's bracket at 174, earning two tech fall wins before eking out a 2-1 decision victory in the quarterfinals. A 6-4 decision loss sent him to the third place bout which he won by forfeit.

Aris Dashiell '25 earned a spot in the third place bout following a major decision win and 4-3 decision victory in the winner's bracket at 197. He won the third place in a 17-9 major decision against Charles Moloy of Western New England.

Will Orso '26 continued to make an immediate impact at 285, as the junior landed three wins by pinfall on his way to placing fifth in what is just his second weekend of collegiate competition.

Other placers for the Cardinals on the day included
Kellen Horst '26 who took seventh at 149, landing two wins on the day, while
Hayden Myers '27 also earned two wins to place eighth at 141.

Next up for Wesleyan is the NEWA Dual Championships on Sunday, January 26 hosted by Johnson & Wales in Providence, Rhode Island.
