Sweet, Morrissey Force Shootout as Cardinals Fall to Plattsburgh

MIDDLETOWN, CT. – Led by senior captains Owen Sweet and Patrick Morrissey with two game-tying goals to force an overtime period, the Wesleyan men's ice hockey team found themselves without a goal after five minutes as they went to a shootout with Plattsburgh State. Plattsburgh came out on top of the 2-2 tie, making two of three goals to win the shootout 2-1 on Saturday night from Spurrier-Snyder Arena.

With two minutes to go in regulation, Morrissey scored the second game-tying goal of the night as the Cardinals (1-6-2 overall) had a two-man advantage on the power play after Plattsburgh (6-5-1 overall) was called for a hooking penalty. Directing from the point, Morrissey's snapshot from Sweet struck directly down the center of the zone and between the legs of Jacob Hearne, sending the game to overtime.

Scoreless through the first 19 minutes as both Cardinals' defenses were put to the test, Plattsburgh was the first on the board in the first period. The lead didn't last too long with Sweet scoring the first tying goal at the half way point of the second period. Unassisted for his third goal of the season, Sweet picked off a Plattsburgh Cardinal at center ice and snapped the puck over the line on a breakaway while left unattended.

Plattsburgh took their second lead of the evening in the third period on a power play, Luk Jirousek scoring the goal as the Cardinals were called for tripping.

Entering the shootout, both Sweet and Morrissey were given the go ahead as the Cardinals' goal scorers. Morrissey made his shot on Hearne.

Patrick McDevitt '28 made 32 saves in goal for the Cardinals to close his night in goal. McDevitt put an end to a breakaway attempt by Jake Lanyi late in the second period to hold off another lead by Plattsburgh. In overtime, McDevitt was good for another three saves. Hearne finished with 34 saves for Plattsburgh.

Hayden Hanes '27 led the Cardinals from the faceoff, winning 11 draws to give the Cardinals the advantage.

The Cardinals return to action on Friday, Jan. 10, when they travel to Williams for a 7 p.m. NESCAC puck drop.
