No. 25 Cardinals Stonewall No. 1 Williams in Upset, Named Little Three Champions

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA. – In a stunning upset of the top-ranked team in the nation, the No. 25 Wesleyan men's soccer team put an end to the Williams College Ephs on Saturday afternoon, stonewalling Williams to claim the first Little Three Championship title in 14 years and stake their flag atop the NESCAC.

Laying claim to the first outright Little Three Championship title since 2011, the Cardinals (7-2-2 overall), who have been banging on the door of the national Top 25 for weeks, did so in spectacular fashion. Facing No. 21 Amherst on Oct. 4, the Cardinals put away the Mammoths in a 2-1 showstopping victory before setting their sights on the No. 1 Ephs (7-1-3 overall, 5-1-2 NESCAC). The common denominator? Junior midfielder Aiden Londergan.

Londergan, on a four-game scoring tear with six goals this season, put away the opening goal against the Mammoths and scored the game-winning goal this afternoon. Londergan ranks second in the NESCAC in scoring while the Cardinals now lead the NESCAC with a 5-0-2 record.

Unbeaten through the last six games, the Cardinals kept up with the Ephs from the kickoff. As both teams found themselves with early scoring opportunities, it was the Cardinals that held the upper hand despite the Ephs outshooting them. Defensively, the Cardinals were quick to clear, giving Mathis Blanc '26 room to breathe but swarmed when the Ephs attacked, refusing to give up an inch.

With just 15 minutes of action underway, Londergan struck from the arc. Driven down the near line by Joshwin Jennings '27, the ball was cleared from inside the box by the Ephs, but pickpocketed by Londergan they could not clear. Londergan corralled the ball to the top of the box before firing on Aleix Anglada. Londergan shot high, appearing to clear the goal to return possession back to the Ephs, but the ball clipped Anglada's fingertips and bounced off the crossbar and over the goal line.

Unhappy with the present circumstances, the Ephs pressured the attack to end the half and continued through the second half with a larger shot margin. Forced to play tighter on the back line with the Ephs looking to tie the game, it was Riley Harvey '29 with a game-saving block at the line with 22 minutes to go while all Eph shots were landing high and out of bounds.

Blanc, now with a standing 7-2-2 record this season, came up with two massive saves in the 20th minute. An Eph throw in from the Cardinals bench proved successful, landing at the line with an Eph situated directly center. Blanc made the initial save and was able to snag the rebound on a diving play. With less than a minute remaining in regulation, the Cardinals cleared their zone, Julian Cauvin '29 booting the ball up field with Anglada nowhere in sight. Caught at the midfield, the Cardinals charged behind Anglada but were held off by another defender that managed to keep up, putting a stop to Sam Wheeler's '27 advances as the clock ran out.

Blanc finished the game with seven saves in goal. Anglada takes the loss with just one save.

The Cardinals return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 14, to face Springfield on the road at 7 PM.
