Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Women’s Hockey Downed at Home by Salve Regina, 3-2

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Late drama in Spurrier-Snyder Rink saw a would-be game-tying goal with 1:20 left initially called a goal, but ultimately waved off by the referees as the Wesleyan women's hockey team was dealt a 3-2 loss to Salve Regina on Tuesday night.

That would-be game-tying goal came off a one-timer in the slot from Amelia Molin '27 that was initially saved by Salve goaltender Taylor Hannafan, but the puck was still on the ice as the goalie moved to her right. Seeing the loose puck, Parker Caldara '29 poked it over the goal line and skated towards her bench as the goal was signaled as good by the referee. However, a referee meeting ensued and after a lengthy talk, the goal was waved off for a goalie interference call and the score reverted to 3-2 in favor of Salve.

The sequence towards the end of the game put a cap on what was a very evenly played contest between the two sides. This marks the third straight meeting between the Cardinals and Seahawks that was decided by one goal.

Play opened with a first career goal from Caldara who skated towards the nearside boards and won the puck off a Salve defender. Skating onto her forehand, Caldara fired a wrist shot on goal that went inside the right post to give Wesleyan a 1-0 lead just 3:20 into play.

That lead was briefly held as the Seahawks scored just 1:34 minutes later, with Reese Pereira showing some speed, receiving the puck at center ice and skating towards Jenna Guglielmi '27 before beating the Wesleyan goaltender five hole.

Salve netted a go-ahead goal with just 23.3 seconds left in the first period, with Pereira again on the finishing end of a well worked goal. Caroline Batchelder won the puck on the far boards and sent a pass to Shannon Kincaid who sent almost a no look pass to Pereira on the right wing who went bar down for her second goal of the night.

Wesleyan knotted the score at 2-2 late in the second period, with Molin scoring with 2:24 left in the frame. Emma Lucchese '28 started the play with an up-ice pass to Sam Galanek '26 who skated in towards the near post before firing a centering pass for Molin at the far post who tapped the puck inside the near post.

Salve went ahead for good as Riley Esposito went the full length of the ice with the puck, carrying from behind her goal all the way to the Cardinals' goal. She centered for Kiersten Rasmussen who worked her way through the Wesleyan defense to get a shot off that beat Gugliemli glove side for the eventual game-winner with 14:26 left in the third.

Wesleyan had their chances, getting a power play a few minutes after the Esposito goal and another with 2:45 left in the game, but Hannafan was up to the task, making 10 of her 28 saves in the third period alone.

The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday with a non-conference Little Three tilt against Williams in Middletown at 2 PM.
