MIDDLETOWN, CT. – Playing in front of the home crowd for the first time in three weeks, the Wesleyan women's hockey team went head-to-head with No. 12 Colby College on Friday night in a 3-1 NESCAC loss at Spurrier-Snyder Arena that saw
Caroline Kee '26 strike on the power play.
In an opening period that was largely played in the neutral zone, the scoring opportunities were maintained to a handful apiece before it was the Cardinals (7-14-0 overall, 2-11-0 NESCAC) that trapped the Mules (14-4-2 overall, 8-4-2 NESCAC) on the power play and lit the lamp first. Awarded the extra attacker with just under five minutes remaining as the Mules were called for tripping, the Cardinals went to work with Kee taking the opening faceoff.
Winning the draw, Kee pushed the puck back to
Shannon Burke '25 on the point and made her way back behind Mules' goaltender Mandy Busky. The puck volleyed between Burke and Cameron '27 Devenney at the blueline before Devenney was given a clear path to Kee at the left post with the one timer over the pad of Busky.
The Cardinals held their one-goal lead late into the second period, but the Mules tied the game up at one off the stick of Beth Sinson with five minutes to go. Managing their own power play as the Cardinals were called for tripping, the Mules took the first lead of the game on a Megan Martodam goal that fell behind
Jenna Guglielmi '27. Georgia Pettygrove closed out the game with an empty-net goal with 30 seconds in regulation.
Devenney, earning an assist on Kee's goal, led all Cardinals with four shots on goal and two blocks. Pettygrove recorded a goal and an assist for the Mules.
Standing guard in goal for the Cardinals, Guglielmi finished the evening with 43 saves. Busky earned the win making 23 saves for the Mules.
The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, Feb. 15, as they celebrate their seniors in the second game of their weekend matchup with Colby beginning at 3 p.m.
