Wrestling Sees Eight Advance to Day 2 of NCAA Div. III Regional

Cardinals sit in fifth place in the team standings heading into Sunday

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Wrestling in the NCAA Div. III Regional at home for the first time since 2014, the Wesleyan wrestling team has plenty still on the line heading into Day 2 on Sunday. Following a full day of bouts in Bacon Field House, eight Cardinals are still in the hunt for All-Region honors and qualification into the NCAA Championships. Both CJ Shea '25 and Hayden Myers '27 are into the semifinal round stage of the winner's bracket at 165 and 141, respectively. Shea and Myers wrestle for a spot in the final with each needing just one win in their two bouts tomorrow to earn a spot into the NCAA Championships. Max Martinez '25 (133), Ike Guttentag '26 (149), Ronnie Christolin '28 (157), Andrew Maiorini '25 (174), Aris Dashiell '25 (197), and Will Orso '26 (285) are all in the hunt in the back draw, needing at least one win for All-Region honors and three wins for a third-place finish and NCAA Championships qualification spot.

Starting with Shea at 165, the senior came in at the #2 seed in the weight class and rolled past Theo Sawyers of WPI in the opening round in a 15-0 tech fall win. Then in the quarterfinals, Shea was handed a close match that ended in a 4-3 decision victory for Shea over Landon Kearns of Coast Guard. Shea opens Sunday against Chase Anestis of Plymouth State.

Myers cruised in his two matches at 141, opening with a pinfall of Ursinus' Billy Beseth in 41 seconds, before earning a 13-5 major decision win over Kyle Moore of Southern Maine to advance to the semifinal stage. Awaiting Myers is a showdown against the #1 seed James Rodriguez of Castleton in what is a rematch of last year's Regional third place bout, which went to Rodriguez in a 4-3 decision.

Martinez is still alive in the back draw at 133, as the senior opened with an 8-2 decision win over Matthew Carrozza of Trinity before being bounced by Castleton's Andrew Marchese in a 4-3 decision. Martinez rallied with a dominating 18-3 tech fall of Clayton O'Connor in the back draw, setting up a showdown with Shaun McLaughlin of Roger Williams to start the day on Sunday.

Guttentag remains in the hunt at 149 as the junior defeated Michael Follo of New England College 9-3 in the opening round and came back with a pin of Rhode Island College's Michael Pestana in 1:26 in the back draw. He opens with James Linder of Western New England tomorrow.

Competing at the NCAA Regionals in his rookie season, Christolin earned two wins and is still alive in the back draw at 157. Christolin opened with a 5-2 decision win over Joey Baisley of WPI before coming back with a 10-4 decision win over Kaleb Pool of Southern Maine in the back draw. He will face Jacob Woodburn of Coast Guard to start the day on Sunday.

He pinned Kyle Stickel of Maine Maritime in 4:07 and followed with a 5-2 decision win over Tucker Vician of Trinity and moved to 3-1 on the day as he landed an 8-6 decision win over Joe Tully of WPI. Maiorini starts Sunday with a match against Jayden Curley of Roger Williams.

Dashiell was denied in double overtime in the 197 winner's bracket but came back and landed a takedown in sudden victory of his bout against Anthony Mears of Southern Maine. He will face Charles Maloy of Western New England needing just one win on Sunday for All-Region honors.
