Underclassmen Open Spring Break with Sweep of No. 17 Christopher Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – Opening the 2025 Spring Break trip with a now 5-1 record, the Wesleyan women's tennis team put the heat to Chrisopher Newport University in a 7-0 sweep on Wednesday afternoon as they were led by a group of underclassmen from the CNU Eyre Courts.

Heading into Spring Break with a 4-1 record, the Cardinals improved to 5-1 thanks in part to the efforts of their underclassmen while led veteran Sarah Youngberg '26. The Cardinals took all six singles matches as Youngberg was the first of the singles matches to hit completion. Walking away with a win over Kendal Chang, Youngberg allowed just three points in a 6-0, 6-3 final.

Debuting for the Cardinals in the regular season, Lucinda Gatsiounis '28 filled the No. 6 slot in the lineup and went head-to-head with Lindsey Bergelin. Gatsiounis earned her first career win, going 6-2, 6-2 over Bergelin.

Natalia Leroy '28 at No. 4 was taken to task by Eva Taylor through set one. The pair tied the match up at six, forcing a tie breaker that saw Leroy come out on top before taking set two to finish the match 7-6 (7-3), 6-2. Filling in at No. 5, Alexandra Burnett '27 was also taken to a seventh game in set one, topping Samantha Robertson 7-5 and followed in set two with a 6-4 final for the point.

Going three sets on court two, Lane Durkin '27 hit a roadblock early on and fell in set one to Kylie Schaefer. As a Cardinal should, Durkin tied the match up at one with set two win and rallied through set three to take the match 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Durkin was not the only match that went three sets. Jackie Soloveychik '27, the top singles player in the nation, threw down with #41 Raine Weis at No. 1, taking an early lead in set one. Weis, not to be outdone roared back and forced Soloveychik to a loss and third set. Soloveychik won the tie breaker and the match running the final tally to 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (11-9).

The Cardinals' control of the courts began in doubles play, earning their first point of the match as they won two of the three doubles matchups. Finishing first, the sixth-ranked pairing of Soloveychik and Leroy pulled a 6-2 victory over Chang and Robertson. The doubles win finished with Gatsiounis and Burnett defeating Erin Gross and Taylor with a 6-4 win at No. 2.

The Cardinals return to action on Thursday, March 20, when they face No. 8 Johns Hopkins for a second time this season, beginning at 3 p.m.
