No. 5 Cardinals Put Away No. 8 Johns Hopkins, 5-2

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – Earning their sixth-straight victory on the efforts of the freshmen and sophomore classes, the No. 5 ranked Wesleyan women's tennis team defeated No. 8 Johns Hopkins University, 5-2, on Thursday afternoon during the Spring Break trip from the Eyre Courts at Christopher Newport.

It was another test of endurance for a lineup made primarily of underclassmen, putting away a sixth win as the team was led by junior Sarah Youngberg. The Blue Jays took two of the three doubles matches, taking an early lead but the Cardinals ran five singles victories to crawl back to the top.

Jackie Soloveychik '27 was the first of the singles matches to finish, closing a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 over Jay Xiao. A standout of the afternoon at No. 6, Lucinda Gatsiounis '28 swept Sahana Sanjeev in a 6-0, 6-0 final for her second win of the season and second match win in a row.

Youngberg was taken to task through set one, going to a tiebreak that saw Youngberg top before blowing through set two for the 7-6 (9-7), 6-1 win over Sydney Langer at No. 3.

Lane Durkin '27 went three rounds with Sophia Kim as the No. 2 in the lineup. Durkin cruised to a 6-3 win through set one, but it was Kim that tied the match up and forced a third set. Durkin pulled away and won outright with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 final.

Durkin was not the only Cardinal to go three sets, Natalia Leroy '28 nailing the final point at No. 5 for the Cardinals over Lia Melvin. Leroy won a tiebreak in set one to garner an early lead but fell in set two. Once again going to seventh game, Leroy came out on top, going 7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 7-5.

Youngberg and Durkin were the lone doubles win as the top pairing for the Cardinals. The pair went to a tiebreak with Langer and Sahana Madala as the match was tied up at six and in the end walked away with the 7-6 (7-2) victory.

The Cardinals return to action on Friday, March 21, when they face Hope beginning at 4 p.m.
