No. 3 Cardinals Rebound Over No. 18 Sewanee at ITA Indoor National

MEMPHIS, TN. – Rebounding from a difficult loss the day prior, the No. 3 ranked Wesleyan women's tennis team pulled out all of the stops in a 5-2 victory over No. 18 Sewanee The University of the South in a consolation round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's National Indoor Championships at the University of Memphis' Leftwich Tennis Center.

After falling to No. 5 Emory on Friday afternoon, the Cardinals fell into a consolation round where they were paired with Sewanee on Saturday morning. The Cardinals sped off to an early lead, sweeping the Tigers in doubles play to gain their first point of the match.

Filling the No. 1 doubles spot, Lane Durkin '27 and Sarah Youngberg '26 were the first to close out a 6-2 win over Ansley Carpenter and Brooke Despriet. Leila Epstein '25 and Alexandra Burnett '27 secured an easy win at No. 3, downing Harper High and Sarah Livingston in a 6-1 near shutout for the Cardinals. At No. 2, 7-5 win went to Natalia Leroy '28 and Jackie Soloveychik '27 over Emma Caldwell and Ivy Wilson.

Durkin opened singles action with the second point of the morning at No. 3 for the Cardinals, sweeping Livingston in set one before easing Livingston to a 6-0, 6-3 final score. Sweeping the competition at No. 2, Youngberg walked away with a 6-0, 6-0 match win over Despreit in the only sweep of the match.

Joining Durkin with her second match win of the weekend tournament, Olivia Chalik '28 the No. 6 win with a 6-3, 6-2 defeat of Caldwell. Chalik's opening performance of her career has been nothing short of impressive.

The final point of the match went to Soloveychik as the top singles contender in the country. Showing off her prowess at No. 1, Soloveychik turned out a 6-3, 6-3 win over Sewanee's Carpenter.

The Cardinals will battle for fifth place in the tournament on Sunday, March 2, facing No. 7 Johns Hopkins at 8 a.m.
