Cardinals Defeated by Christopher Newport to Open Spring Break

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – Despite a doubles play sweep for the Wesleyan men's tennis team on Thursday afternoon, Christopher Newport University pulled through with the 4-3 win as Wesleyan opened their annual Spring Break trip from the Eyre Courts.

The Cardinals jumped to a lead early in the match, sweeping all three doubles matches for the first point of the afternoon. Chase Kasday '26 and Brett Keeling '27 were forced to a seventh game by Gabe Smith and Eddy Porsmyr Hansen, defeating the No. 2 pairing with a 7-5 final. Facing off at No. 3, Max Lustgarten '25 and Jex Frankel '27 posted a 7-6 win over Rainer Christianson and Alex Seretis. The final match went to Max Litton '26 and Harry Collomb '26 at No. 1 to pull the final win as they put away Vincent Truong and Ashton Legum, 7-6.

Taking a lead through singles play, the Captains picked up three wins before the Cardinals were able to gain traction at No. 2. Lustgarten was taken to task by Nesh Kumaresan going an extra game through set one. Lustgarten was victorious despite it all but was forced to a tiebreak in set two, finishing with the win 7-5, 7-6 (7-3).

Kasday at No. 6 went three sets with Porsmyr Hansen, earning the final point for the Cardinals. Kasday finished out early in set one, but Hansen tied the match despite it all. Kasday's final tally was a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 score to put him on top.

Even without a win at No. 4, Tai MacDonald '26 played a heap of tiebreakers with Legum. MacDonald won set one 7-6 (7-5), but Legum forced a third set with a 6-3 win in set two. Down to the wire, Legum closed out the final set with a 7-6 (9-7) score.

The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, March 22, when they play Mary Washington beginning at 3 p.m.
