Cardinals Host Defeat of Mary Washington, 5-2

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – Picking up their first win of the Spring Break road trip, the Wesleyan men's tennis team put away a 5-2 victory over No. 27 University of Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon, picking up their fourth win of the season from the Christopher Newport Eyre Courts.

Led by senior Max Lustgarten '25  with a doubles and singles win for the Cardinals' efforts, Brett Keeling '27 and Chase Kasday '26 matched the example set as the combined on both match fronts.

The Cardinals picked up their first point of the afternoon through doubles play, going 2-1 at No. 2 and No. 3. Paired as the No. 2 in the lineup, Keeling and Kasday defeated Evan Fisher and Brock Ladehoff in a 6-3 showdown. Lustgarten, paired with Jex Frankel '27 as the No. 3 pairing, closed a 6-3 win over Will Fromherz and Matt Scott.

Forced to a tiebreaker in set one, Lustgarten was the first to finish with a win on the singles front for the Cardinals. Facing Ladehoff at No. 2, Lustgarten went 7-6 (7-1) through the tiebreak and finished with 6-1 set two victory. Lustgarten was not the only one taken to a set one tiebreak, tied up at six, Kasday pulled a 7-6 (7-2) win before finishing off the match with a 6-4 final set.

Keeling's win at No. 5 solidified the Cardinals lead with a win over Jack Riordan. Keeling went an extra game through set one as Riordan took Keeling to the wire in both sets. Keeling ultimately turned out a 7-6, 6-5 win. Sitting as the No. 3, Max Litton '26 laid claim to the final point of the afternoon for the Cardinals with a three-set defeat of Fisher. Litton tied the match up at one after Fisher was the leader after set one, putting away two set wins to finish the match with a final 5-7, 6-1, 6-4.

The Cardinals return to action on Sunday, March 23, when they face No. 16 Kenyon, beginning at 12 p.m.
