MIDDLETOWN, CT. – The Wesleyan men's tennis team could not hold off No. 9 Amherst College on Sunday afternoon, falling in a 6-1 NESCAC matchup, but through four, three-set matches, Wesleyan was led by
Max Lustgarten '25 to the wire from the Bacon Field House.
Despite the final score against Little Three rival Amherst (10-3 overall), the Cardinals(6-3 overall, 2-2 NESCAC) took four of their six singles matches to tiebreaking third sets. Lustgarten did have the lone singles victory at No. 3, but his teammates were vying for points on either side of him. Facing Aldiyar Abzhan, Lustgarten took set one with a two-point lead, but Abzhan did not take kindly to the lead and tied the match. Lustgarten's win ended with a 10-point third set, earning the 6-4, 3-6, 10-6 win.
At No. 2,
Harry Collomb '26 won set one but could not catch Eldred Opie who won two straight for a 6-3, 3-6, 7-10 final.
JT Bilski '26 tied his match up in set two, Andreas Sillaste breaking the win to a 3-6, 7-5, 3-6 tally. In much of the same manner, Sujit Chepuri held his lead over
Brett Keeling '27 in set three and won the match at No. 5, 2-6, 6-3, 4-6.
While the Cardinals did not earn the doubles point, Collomb and
Max Litton '26 did turn out a victory as the No. 1 doubles pairing over Sillaste and Spencer, Leung, 6-1.
The Cardinals return to action on Sunday, April 6, when they face Conn. College on the road at 10 a.m.
