MIDDLETOWN, CT. – Playing host to the NESCAC Championships for the first time since 2011, the Wesleyan men's track and field team put on quite a show on home turf as
Ethan Singleton '28 and the men's 4x100m relay team broke two school records on the way to an eighth-place team finish from the Andersen Track at Citrin Field.
Middlebury College finished the day as the NESCAC Championships, followed by Amherst College at the runners-up. While the Cardinals placed eighth, the team marked 16 Top 10 finishes throughout the day. On top of the broken records,
Steve Paul '28 and
Liam Calhoun '26 earned first-career All-NESCAC track and field honors.
Just three events into the track races, Singleton took flight in the men's 400m, a race he owns the school indoor record, and crossed the finish line in fourth place. Running a 48.73, Singleton broke the previous school record held by
Sam Musto '24 set just last year.
It was a combined effort in the first relay race of the afternoon, but the Cardinals got the job done as the combined efforts of
Neil Bulchandani '28, Singleton, Paul, and
Patrick Schechtman-Taylor '26 placed sixth with a record time of 42.95. 12 years in the making, the team broke the previous time of 43.27 was set back in 2013 by Luca Ameri '15, LaDarius Drew '15, Jack Pacelle '13, and James Dottin '13.
Paul earned top marks in the opening races of the championship. Placing third in the 100m, Paul's 10.86 earned him All-NESCAC accolades as a freshman. Paul followed his performance with a fourth-place finish in the 200m, racing a 21.79 time. Calhoun pocketed his own All-NESCAC recognitions, placing third in the men's 5,000m as he crossed the finish line in front of a home crowd at 14:41.34.
Placing sixth in the 800m,
George Lepska '25 ran a solid 1:52.99. Sandwiching between Calhoun's race and the 4x100m,
Noah Mahoney '27 ran a 31:20.64 in the 10,000m and placed sixth as well.
All three of the men's relays clocked Top 10 placements. After the top marks of the 4x100m, Paul, Schechtman-Taylor, Singleton, and
Luke Consolati '25 placed 10
th in the 4x400m, combining for a final 3:26.08. Placing fifth in the 4x800m relay,
Rob D'Aquila '26,
Nate Fogarty '25,
Ben Taffet '26, and Lepska closed with a 7:46.33.
Leading off the field events,
Javier Orellana '25 earned a fourth-place finish in the shot put, throwing for 14.43m. Ethan Dangle '28 led the way in the discus throw, going 41.06m for seventh place.
Eli Liedtka '27 placed ninth at 40.13m. Placing seventh in the hammer throw,
Will Dollhopf '25 marked his throw at 47.82m.
James Giokaris '24 sat just two spots behind in ninth with 45.75.
Rami Hayes-Messinger '26 threw 50.22m in the javelin throw, earning sixth place. Giokaris picked up an eighth-place closer at 49.36m.
The Cardinals will take the week to prepare for the New England Division III Championships, beginning Friday, May 2, through Saturday, May 3.
