Women’s Tennis Defend Sixth-Straight Little Three Title, Defeating Williams 6-1

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA. – It takes tenacity and a hunger for more to continually defend a habitual level of success and that is exactly what the Wesleyan women's tennis team did on Sunday morning. Marking a 6-1 defeat of Williams College, Wesleyan won the program's sixth-consecutive Little Three Championship title during the regular season finale on the road.

The Cardinals enter the NESCAC Championships with a 16-2 regular season record while running 9-1 in the NESCAC. The Cardinals will play as the No. 2, finishing just second to Middlebury who remain undefeated in conference play. The program's sixth Little Three title came as the result of a 5-2 win over No. 12 Amherst on March 30 and a hard-fought battle against another Top 20 team in the Ephs.

Leading the way, senior captain Renna Mohsen-Breen '25 and Lucinda Gatsiounis '28 were the first of the doubles matches to complete their set. Mohsen-Breen returns to the lineup as part of the No. 3 pairing with Gatsiounis after a near full season of recovery and the duo turned out a 6-3 victory over Mia Roets and Ellie Stark. Clinching the first point of the match, Sarah Youngberg '26 and Lane Durkin '27 earned the 6-4 ruling over Yuu Ishikawa and Jane Ladaga as the top pairing. Youngberg and Durkin combined for a 13-3 record this season.

Youngberg returned to the court for another win as the No. 3, picking up the first point of singles play with a 6-3, 6-1 finish over Roets. Youngberg finishes the regular season 13-1. Leading the Cardinals this season with a 16-0 record,  Durkin was the next to finish at No. 2, defeating Mia Thomann, 6-3, 6-3.

Facing Stark at No. 6, Gatsiounis ran a 6-1, 6-3 finish. Since entering the lineup full time, Gatsiounis is 11-0. Marking a 6-3, 6-1 at the top of the lineup, Jackie Soloveychik '27 put away Yuu Ishikawa in another triumphant victory.

The final point of the match went to Macie Carlos '27 as the No. 5 after a nail-biter first set ran to a tiebreak. While Carlos had an early lead, Ladaga reached six first and forced Carlos to tie the set. Running to a 12-10 tiebreaker to win the set, Carlos did not allow Ladaga a single point, winning 7-6 (12-10), 6-0.

Playing host to the NESCAC Championship for women's tennis, the Cardinals will face No. 7 Colby on Friday, May 2, at 1 p.m.
