WORCESTER, Mass. – For the third straight season and the fourth time in the last five years the race has been held, the Wesleyan men's crew team has won the Class of 2003 title. The No. 4 ranked Cardinals won all three varsity races in challenging weather conditions on Lake Quinsigamond.
Competing against No. 7 Colby, No. 9 WPI, and No. 11 Hamilton, Wesleyan's varsity 8 had a blistering performance, finishing in 6:15.9 to capture the win. The Mules placed second at 6:20.2 while Hamilton took third at 6:31.4 and WPI finished in fourth at 6:35.1. The more than four second win came in gusty conditions with temperate ranging in the low 40s throughout the morning.
Wesleyan's 2
nd varsity 8 had a commanding win as the Cardinals' boat clocked in at 6:24.3 to defeat Colby by nearly 13 seconds.
The Cardinals rounded out the day with a win in the 3
rd varsity 8 competition as Wesleyan's third varsity boat won the race with a time of 6:30.2. Wesleyan's 4
th varsity 8 placed second in the race, ahead of Colby's 3
rd Varsity 8 and WPI's 3
rd and 4
th varsity 8 boats.
Wesleyan will be tested again next week in a regatta featuring Tufts, Bates, and UMass. In that race next Saturday on the Malden River (home of the Jumbos), Wesleyan will face the No. 2 Jumbos and No. 7 Bates.
