No. 6 Women’s Tennis Advances to NCAA Elite 8 in Sweep of No. 11 Carnegie Mellon

PITTSBURGH, PA. – Returning to the NCAA Tournament's Elite 8 for the seventh year in a row, the Wesleyan women's tennis team conquered their latest foe in No. 11 Carnegie Mellon University in a 4-0 sweep on Saturday morning. Sarah Youngberg '26 crushed the match point once again as Wesleyan prepares for Claremont, California.

It was the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles pairings, again, that came through with the early morning wins to begin the Cardinals' march to four points. Jackie Soloveychik '27 and Renna Mohsen-Breen '25 toppled Anika Joshi and Shelly Zinchenko on court three in a 6-3 final, opening the gates for Youngberg and Lane Durkin '27. Durkin and Youngberg took Zoe Angell and Anna Chow in a 6-4 victory at No. 1 for the lead.

Picking up where she left off, Macie Carlos dug the Tartans' hole just a little bit deeper with point two for the Cardinals and the first to finish. Carlos defeated Victoria Gazda at No. 5, dropping just four points in 6-2, 6-2 match tally. The Cardinals earned another victory at No. 6, Lucinda Gatsiounis '28 picking off Manuela Van Cotthem in a 6-3, 6-3 match to place the Cardinals within one point of their trip to the West Coast.

Youngberg's victory at No. 3 began with a set one win over Ancele Dolensek. Looking to make Youngberg's match difficult, Dolensek held the slightest of edges through set two with Youngberg tying the match one, two, three, and four before flipping the match in her favor. Dolensek's match tie at five forced Youngberg to extra games but it was the Cardinals that ultimately prevailed as Youngberg won 6-2, 7-5.

The Cardinals will take the week to prepare for the NCAA Tournament quarterfinal round in Claremont, CA., on Tuesday, May 20, as they await the winner of the Pomona-Pitzer and Trinity (TX) third round matchup.
