Youngberg Advances No. 6 Cardinals in Second Round Sweep of Stevens

PITTSBURGH, PA. – Earning an extra day to rest and prepare after a First Round bye, the Wesleyan women's tennis team made their 2025 NCAA Tournament entrance in the Second Round, making quick work of Stevens Institute of Technology on Friday morning in a 4-0 sweep to advance to the Third Round of the tournament at host Carnegie Mellon University.

Following suit to the trends of the bracket, the Cardinals left little room for error and did not drop a match to the Ducks for the second year in a row. Both teams met in the Second Round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament, a 5-0 sweep for the Cardinals. The three winners of the bracket's First Round walked away with 4-0 sweeps as was the Second Round matchup between No. 11 Carnegie Mellon and Ohio Northern with the Tartans advancing to face the Cardinals.

Cruising to their first point of the morning, the Cardinals began the day winning two of the three doubles matches. In a shake up to the lineup, Jackie Soloveychik '27 and Renna Mohsen-Breen '25 debuted as the No. 3 pairing for the first time this season. Clearing Milagros Carbajal Diaz and Sude Aytekin in a 6-1 victory, the pair set the tone for the remainder of the match. Clinching the doubles points to begin singles action, Sarah Youngberg '26 and Lane Durkin '27 ran a 6-1 finish over Alix Dry and Stephanie Untermeyer.

Sweeping Lorena Piegas at No. 5, Macie Carlos '27 did not settle for wasted time and was the first to the board without dropping a single game. Carlos' 6-0, 6-0 finish cleared the way for Natalia Leroy's '28 victory at No. 4. Sparing with Carbajal Diaz, Leroy allowed just two points from the MAC Freedom Rookie of the Year and dominated in a 6-0, 6-2 tally.

Nailing the match point at No. 3, Youngberg's 6-0, 6-2 defeat of Untermeyer blanketed the Ducks in silence and advanced the Cardinals another day forward.

The Cardinals await No. 11 Carnegie Mellon on Saturday, May 10, at 9 a.m.
