Wesleyan Athletics Finishes Top 20 in 2024-25 DIII Learfield Directors’ Cup Standings

Cardinals finish in 19th place in 2024-25, the second-highest ranking for the department in school history

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan University Athletics department recorded the school's second-ever Top 20 finish in the Division III Learfield Directors' Cup Standings, accumulating 667 total points to finish in 19th place out of 431 colleges and universities classified as Division III for NCAA competition. The previous Top 20 finish for Wesleyan came back in 2018-19 when the Cardinals placed a school-best 14th overall.

The Learfield Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today.  Points are awarded based on each institution's NCAA Tournament finishes in up to 18 sports – nine women's and nine men's – four of which must be men's basketball and soccer and women's basketball and soccer, leaving the next 14 highest points scored to also be counted. After completing what was the best fall season in the department's history, wherein the Cardinals sat 12th nationally with five fall teams qualifying for NCAA Championships, Wesleyan totaled 295 points in the spring season that saw four teams qualify for their respective NCAA Championships.

The Wesleyan women's crew team led the way with 85 points as the Cardinals finished in third place in the final standings behind the team's best-ever finish by the 2nd varsity 8 boat at an NCAA Championship race. That boat finished was the NCAA runner-up in the 2V8 competition while the varsity 8 boat placed fourth. Wesleyan accumulated enough points to finish in third place overall and were supported by five All-NESCAC performers which tied a team record.

Women's lacrosse went on a deep run, defeating Babson 15-9 at home in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament before rolling past Rowan 16-4 in the Third Round to reach the NCAA Quarterfinals for just the second time in team history. The Cardinals' NCAA Tournament run came to an end in the Quarterfinal round in a 7-6 loss at Colby but Wesleyan also managed to snap Middlebury's 67-game win streak in the Semifinal round of the NESCAC Tournament to advance to the NESCAC Championship game for the second straight year.

Women's tennis prolonged a run of excellence, reaching the Quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament for the seventh straight season. The Cardinals finished as the NESCAC runner-up and won the Little Three Championship for the sixth straight year dating back to 2019. Wesleyan had three singles players named All-NESCAC while Jackie Soloveychik '27 played for an NCAA title in the individual singles tournament, finishing as the national runner-up.

Men's lacrosse made it back into the NCAA Tournament for the 11th time in team history, defeating Babson in the Second Round to advance to the Sweet 16 phase for the ninth time. Wesleyan advanced to the NESCAC Championship game for the second straight year and repeated as Little Three Champions.

The final Directors' Cup standings featured several NESCAC schools ranked high on the list including Tufts at No. 3, Middlebury at No. 5, Amherst at No. 7, and Williams at No. 11, which paired with Wesleyan gives the conference five schools ranked Top 20. Emory topped the list, becoming the seventh different institution to take home the Learfield Directors' Cup.
