MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – After not recording a shutout last season until the First Round of the NCAA Tournament, the No. 13 ranked Wesleyan field hockey team has played two games thus far in 2025 and has still yet to allow a goal. Behind an eight-save performance from senior goalkeeper
Audrey Pace '26, the Cardinals took down Vassar by a score of 1-0 on Saturday afternoon from Hicks Field.
Â
Wesleyan had to deal with a gamely Vassar side who controlled play for much of the first quarter. In the opening four minutes, Pace had to make four saves including two from close range. Pace later had to make an incredible toe stop on Zoe Robinson in the second quarter, as the sophomore forward wound up for a shot while carrying to her right, as Pace reached out with her right foot to push the ball just wide of the right post.
Â
Coming out of halftime, Wesleyan possessed deep in the Brewers' defensive end before
Emily Smith '29 took a shot that was initially dealt with by Ellie Rosen in goal. The ball then kicked out wide to
Teddy Tolbert '28 who took a touch towards the end line before she shot on a reverse sweep with power that beat Rosen to her left, sneaking inside the far post. That goal is Tolbert's second in as many games to start the season.
Â
Pace had to make another important save just under two minutes later as she alerted kicked away a shot with power from Mackenzie Allen on a Vassar corner. Wesleyan then dominated the fourth quarter, outshooting the Brewers 5-0 and holding Vassar without any real scoring chances as the Cardinals walked away with the 1-0 win.
Â
This marks the first time since 2019 that Wesleyan has recorded back-to-back shutout wins. Pace records her second career shutout in goal while her eight saves played a key role in the outcome.
Â
Wesleyan hits the road for their next game which is slated for Wednesday at 6 PM against Union.
