CLINTON, N.Y. – The Wesleyan men's squash team dropped a tight 5-4 decision at Hamilton on Saturday afternoon. The defeat drops the Cardinals to 3-5 on the season while the Continentals are now 4-5.
Out of the nine varsity matches played on the day, only two were decided in sweeps while four matches went into a deciding fifth game.
Winning an epic match that needed over an hour to complete,
Harrison Tillinghast '29 triumphed at #4 over Joey Applebuam, securing a 5-11, 11-8, 5-11, 11-4, 11-5 come-from-behind win.
Zach Lu '29 also won in five games and from 2-1 down as the freshman defeated Lucas Walden 8-11, 13-11, 8-11, 11-7, 11-3 at #5.
A third five-game win, wherein the Cardinal trailed 2-1 in the match, came from
Finn Goodson '29 as the freshman trailed James Merrill at #9 before winning the final two games including a 14-12 thriller in the fifth game. Goodson won by a scoreline of 11-5, 8-11, 9-11, 11-2, 14-12.
Matthyaz Williams '29 completed the four wins on the day for Wesleyan in what was the quickest match to finish with Williams needing just 22 minutes to defeat Carlo Caffuzzi 3-0 (11-3, 11-5, 11-6).
Other results that didn't go the Cardinals way included
Dominic Wilson '29 losing in a match that needed five games at #3 against Jacob Li.
Dhairya Shah '27,
Arjun Somani '29, and
Zack Idinopulos '26 each won one game in their respective matches.
The Cardinals are back in action with three matches at home in the coming week, starting with a Thursday morning match against Hobart starting at 11 AM.
