Slow Start Dooms Cardinals in 63-49 Loss at Hamilton

CLINTON, N.Y. – The Wesleyan women's basketball team fell behind early and couldn't recover in a 63-49 loss at Hamilton on Friday night. The Cardinals (6-9, 1-2 NESCAC) lose their fifth straight game playing away from home while Hamilton (9-7, 1-1 NESCAC) remain unbeaten in Clinton, improving to 6-0 at home this season.

Wesleyan struggled to score all throughout the first half, going 2-for-14 from the floor in the first quarter and 3-of-11 shooting in the second quarter. The Cardinals' leading scorer Olivia Quinn '26 picked up two fouls in the first quarter and another in the second quarter, which played a role in the lopsided scoreline, while Hamilton's Kendall Harris pumped in 11 first half points to give the Continentals a 35-16 halftime lead.

The Cardinals came out strong to start the second half, using an 8-2 run to cut the Hamilton lead down to 13 points. Meghan Kirck '28 connected on three-point shot attempts on back-to-back possessions, but 13 points was as close as the Cardinals would get to Hamilton as Wesleyan trailed 49-33 entering the fourth quarter.

Hamilton went on a 7-0 run to put the game away early in the fourth quarter, taking their largest lead of the game at 59-36 with under six minutes remaining. Wesleyan scored the final seven points of the game with baskets coming from three first-years in Delaney Beighley '29, Molly Brown '29, and Abigail Goff '29.

Kirck led the Cardinals with 13 points (5-10 FG, 3-5 3FG) while Alli Jones '27 tallied 12 points and 13 rebounds. Quinn had to play through foul trouble for most of the game and finished with seven points before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Ali Murphy '27 totaled five points and 10 rebounds.

The Cardinals head to Amherst on Saturday for a 3 PM tip against the Mammoths.
