WATERVILLE, ME. - Forcing a 2-2 game to overtime, the Wesleyan men's hockey team fell in extra minutes to Colby College on Friday night, seeing a 3-2 final score from Colby's Jack Kelly Rink.
Ethan Davidson '26 jumpstarted the action, leading the Cardinals (5-8-0 overall, 4-3-0 NESCAC) to the first goal of the game in the opening minutes.Wrangling the puck down low behind Mules (8-4-2 overall, 4-3-1 NESCAC) goaltender Cooper Rautenstrauch, Davidson danced his way out and around the post before striking from out wide.
The Cardinals' one-goal lead would hold until the closing minutes of the second period before an interference call would lead to a Mules power-play goal scored by Colby Browne.
Rallying again on the power play in the third period, the Mules capitalized on a Cardinals roughing penalty and took the lead thanks to Donovan O'Neil. The Cardinals would return the favor at the halfway mark, putting up a power-play goal from
Jack Marottolo '26 on a Mules interference call. Set just outside the left post, Marottolo tipped the puck over the line after receiving the pass from
Jack DesRuisseaux '29 at the point.
Hauling the game to extra minutes, both teams looked like they were headed to a shootout. With a second remaining on the clock, Browne ended the game and secured a victory for the Mules.
Hayden Hanes '27 led all Cardinals with five shots on Rautenstrauch while Browne was the offensive drive for the Mules with two goals on five shots.
In goal,
Patrick McDevitt '28 finished the evening with 35 saves. Rautenstrauch picked up the win with 32 saves for the Mules.
The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, Jan. 17, when they face No. 13 Bowdoin on the road at 3 p.m.
