MIDDLETOWN, CT. – Recording the second of back-to-back wins to open the back half of the season, the Wesleyan women's ice hockey team trounced Johnson & Wales University (Providence) on Monday afternoon in a 3-1 non-conference win as three separate players tallied goals along the way at Spurrier-Snyder Arena.
The Cardinals (2-7-1 overall) were quick to establish the narrative of Monday's conquest, pinning the Wildcats (4-5-0 overall) in their own zone early in the opening period and left little room for error. The Wildcats could not gain momentum and were held to just two shots on goaltender
Sami Smith '27. Neither club would register a goal in the first 20 minutes, but the Cardinals were cruising heading into the second period.
Scoring the opening goal of the match,
Parker Caldara '29 extended her scoring streak as she now leads all Cardinals with six goals. With less than two minutes underway, Caldara wrangled a loose puck in the near corner as the Wildcat with possession was brushed off course and wrapped her shot around the mouth of the goal to rip the puck under the pad of Avery Hall. The Wildcats rallied behind Caldara's goal, putting up 17 shots to salvage an attempted comeback.
The Cardinals would strike again in the second period,
Dylan Green '26 scoring a short-handed goal on a hooking call.
Caroline Humber '29 won the faceoff, the puck forced into the neutral zone before Green beat Kailin Kane in a foot race to Hall.
Securing another first for the freshman class,
Eve Omura '29 highlighted the third period with her first career goal as a Cardinal. Making her way behind the goal,
Aiko Sims '27 forced a back-handed pass to place the puck at the top of the crease for Omura making her way across from the near wall. Omura scored from the left post. Down three goals, the Wildcats dashed the Cardinals' hopes of a shutout for Smith as Kylie O'Keefe scored the final goal of the game.
Leading all Cardinals, Green and
Caroline Kee '26 finished with seven shots on goal while the Wildcats were carried by Jordan Hopping and Allyson Barry with four shots apiece.
In goal, Smith earned her first win of the season, collecting 26 saves. For the Wildcats, Hall finished the afternoon with 36 saves.
The Cardinals return to action on Friday, Jan. 9, when they face Williams on the road at 7 p.m.
