Box Score DAVENPORT, FL. - Running three back in the sixth inning, the Wesleyan University baseball team powered through to a two-run lead to defeat Suffolk University, 9-7, on Wednesday night, recording the first win of the season as Spring Break play continues in Florida.
Paying no mind to the immediate run at the top of the game, the Cardinals quickly went to work at the bottom of the opening inning with
Tucker DeWolf '28 as the lead off. Reaching on a single to the first baseman, DeWolf was ushered home by
William Moore '26 nailing a double to left field. With
Jonah Timmons '27 now on base following a walk, Moore was within reach of a run after a wild pitch took priority and scored. Timmons returned a third run as the inning closed.
The Cardinals followed their early performance with two more runs on the next outing at the plate.
Oliver Kwan '28 stole second base, reaching after he was hit by pitcher John McDevitt, and reached home as the first baseman fumbled the throw. With the rotation returning to DeWolf, the sophomore homered to left field to give the Cardinals a four-run lead.
Serving up three runs in the third, the Rams fell within one point of the Cardinals, but the lead would hold through to sixth inning.
James Marsden's '26 ball to right field sent
Sam Hensinger '26 home in the fifth, but it was not enough to stave off the Rams tying the game at six and taking the lead at seven. The lead was short lived.
Marcus Jang '26 walked to open the bottom of the inning and scored with bases loaded as Timmons was hit at the plate. Marsden hit a double on the next at bat, returning the lead to the Cardinals with runs from Hensinger and Moore.
Marsden led all Cardinals with three RBI with DeWolfe, Moore, and Hensinger each scoring twice.
Yash Desai '29 earns the win from the mound, pitching three innings as he struck out four and dropped three earned runs.
Ned Shapiro '26 gets the save as he closed the final two innings and did not allow a single hit.
The Cardinals return to action on Friday, March 13, when they face Dominican at 9:30 a.m.
