Softball Secures Another Florida Sweep, Increasing Win Streak to Five After Defeating Hiram and Swarthmore

Cardinals finish with double-digit hits in both games on Friday

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Wesleyan softball team continued to roll on their Spring Break trip, securing a Friday sweep of Hiram and Swarthmore to increase the Cardinals' win streak to five in a row. Wesleyan toppled Hiram 10-2 in six innings before landing a dominant 6-0 win over a Swarthmore team that won 33 games last season and was ranked inside the Top 25 nationally as of last week.

The Cardinals took care of Hiram in the first game of the day, coasting to a 10-2 win by mercy rule in six innings.  Wesleyan plated three runs in both the second and third innings to lead 6-0. Kelly Baker '26 singled in a run in the 2nd while two more came in on the same play as a costly error in the field led to the three-run play. Then in the 3rd it was Ella DeCresenzo '27 coming through with a two-out two-run single to center.

Meanwhile, in the circle, Whitney Gigante '28 was working on a no-hitter, as the sophomore completed five innings with no hits allowed. She retired two more batters in the 6th before allowing a double to Hannah Marlow that broke up the no-hit bid. Hiram plated two runs in their half of the 6th to make it a four-run game.

The Cardinals then walked it off in the bottom half of the 6th as Nicole Celi '27 bunted in a run before Molly Lennon '26 sent an RBI double to center. With two outs and two runners in scoring position, Jordynn Killion '27 came through with a game-ending two-run single out to center that made it 10-2 Cardinals.

Lennon led the Wesleyan offense with a 3-for-4 showing as all three of her hits went for doubles. Lennon also scored two runs and drove in one. DeCrescenzo went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored.

Gigante moved to 3-0 on the season as she allowed just the one hit in 5.2 innings of work, striking out three and allowing two unearned runs. DeCrescenzo came on in the 6th with the bases loaded and two outs and came up with a crucial pop out to first to end the inning and keep Hiram from lowering a four-run deficit.

Following a quick break, the Cardinals matchup up against a talented Swarthmore team that came into the day winners of seven straight before falling to No. 7 ranked East Texas Baptist earlier on Friday morning in a 1-0 loss.

Needing a stellar showing in the circle, Jacelyn Lees '28 delivered in a big way for the Cardinals, as the sophomore right hander went the distance in a complete game shutout. Lees allowed six hits and two walks with four strikeouts as she needed just 96 pitches to finish the job and get a much-deserved win on the board.

Lees was saddled with a 1-0 lead before she even touched the ball as the Cardinals plated one run in the top of the 1st as Killion lifted a sacrifice fly out to center to score Lennon from third. Lees nearly ran into some trouble herself in the 1st, as Swarthmore had two runs in scoring position with one out, only to see the cleanup hitter Avery McClure pop up to second and Linnaea Rasmusson pop out to short to end the inning.

Wesleyan then chased Swarthmore's starting pitcher Lane Barron in the 2nd inning, batting around the lineup while scoring five runs on six hits in the frame. Rebecca Cassel-Siskind '26 came through with a two-run single with the bases loaded to make it 3-0 Cardinals. Cat Palmer '26 followed with a two-run single of her own and Waverly Smart '27 tacked on another run with an RBI single out to right with two outs as Wesleyan led 6-0.

Lees took over from there, leaving two runs on in both the 2nd and 4th innings, while she retired the side in-order in the 3rd and 5th innings. With the score still 6-0 Wesleyan heading into the bottom of the 7th, Lees battled through a bases loaded situation with one out. She got the #3 hitter Emilee Espinoza to foul out to Palmer at first base before finishing the game with a McClure fielder's choice out to short to land a big win for the Cardinals.

After a 10-hit showing against Hiram, Wesleyan totaled 11 hits against the Garnet in game two. Cassel-Siskind, Palmer, and Killion each finished with two hits. Cassel-Siskind went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run while Palmer also went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Killion went 2-for-3 with one RBI and Lennon went 1-for-2 with one walk and two runs scored.

The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday with games against Dominican (Illinois) and Babson.
