BRUNSWICK, ME. - Victorious in a must-watch Top 10 matchup, No. 3 Wesleyan women's tennis team broke a 5-2 win over No. 10 Bowdoin College on Sunday morning led in part by freshmen duo
Kendall Smith and
Mariia Kornilova.
This go around it was not the Cardinals that clinched a point on the doubles front as both the No. 1 and No. 2 matches went to the Polar Bears. Smith and Kornilova, the No. 2 duo, were victorious at No. 3, defeating Caroline Stuhlfaut and Naomi Williams, 6-2. The pair remain undefeated at 8-0 over the last 10 matches.
Smith was the match point at No. 6, securing the win for the Cardinals in a three-set match against Julia Ross. Ross tied the match with at win in set two, forcing Smith to rally to a 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4) final score.
Sarah Youngberg '26 was the first of the singles play matches to close, defeating Zoe Sun at No. 4 with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) finish. Kornilova followed at No. 3, playing a tiebreaker against Bella Hartung and won 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Falling in set one,
Lara Afolayanka '29 ran to her own tiebreak, winning sets two and three to defeat Suzanne Pogorelec at No. 2 507, 6-3, 7-6 (10-8). At No. 5,
Natalia Leroy '28 fought Assante-LaBash to a tightly contested match, prevailing through three 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-3.
The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, April 18, when they host Bates at 2 p.m.
