WATERVILLE, ME. – Continuing to a seven-match win streak, the third-ranked Wesleyan women's tennis team pressed the program's habitual success with a 6-1 defeat of Colby College on Saturday morning, the win led entirely by underclassmen as Wesleyan improves to 11-2.
The Cardinals are undefeated in the NESCAC at 6-0, dominating with a largely first-year lineup. The Cardinals clinched the early doubles point against the Mules, sweeping all three matches.
Mariia Kornilova '29 and
Kendall Smith '29 defeated Ella Novion and Jade Finestone 6-2 at No. 3, securing the morning's winning mindset. At No. 2,
Agnes Guggenheim '29 and
Lara Afolayanka '29 ran 6-4 over Kay Lowy and Waka Aida. A 6-3 win went to
Sarah Youngberg '26 and Lucinda Gatiounis '28 over Isabella Suk and Michaela Landry as the No. 1 pair.
Sweeping her match at No. 3, Kornilova made quick work of Landry and did not drop a single game as she defeated Landry 6-0, 6-0. Afolayanka cleared an easy set one at No. 2 but was taken to task by Novion in the final set, securing a 6-1, 6-4 win.
Sitting atop the lineup at No. 1, Guggenheim faced Finestone and crushed a 6-2, 6-2 victory for the Cardinals with the clinching fourth point. At No. 4,
Natalia Leroy '28 finessed a 6-4, 6-3 defeat of Soumya Wijesekera. Smith was forced to a tiebreak at No. 5, winning set one before falling to Tina Barrow in set two. Smith grappled to a 6-2, 4-6, 10-3 final.
The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, April 12, when they face No. 10 Bowdoin at 10 a.m.
