Box Score 2 LEWISTON, Me. – The Wesleyan softball team was swept by Bates in a Friday doubleheader, with the Cardinals dropping game one 2-1 and falling 5-3 in game two. The Cardinals drop to 14-13 (4-8 NESCAC) while the Bobcats are now 13-16 (3-9 NESCAC) on the year.
Game one was a pitcher's duel between
Whitney Gigante '28 and Isabella Albro that ultimately came down to one at-bat in the bottom of the 6
th inning.
The first two innings came and went with neither side advancing a runner into scoring position. Wesleyan was first to threaten in the 3
rd as Gigante led off with an infield single and was sacrificed over to second on a bunt from
Sam Chappell '28. There were later runners on second and first with two outs for
Rebecca Cassel-Siskind '26 who grounded into a fielder's choice out at shortstop to end the frame.
The first run came across in the 5
th as Gigante doubled to right center with one out and after pinch runner
Lucia Zaremba '29 moved to third on a grounder from Chappell, Zaremba came in to score on a passed ball to make it 1-0 Wesleyan.
Wesleyan then missed a chance at extended their lead, leaving two runners in scoring position in a scoreless top of the 6
th, setting the stage for the pivotal half inning when Bates had one runner on with two outs when Isabel Bettencourt took an 0-1 pitch and drove the ball over the fence out in left center for a go-ahead two-run shot.
Suddenly, Bates took a 2-1 lead into the 7
th and Albro did the rest, retiring the side in-order to finish off a game one win for the Bobcats.
Gigante went six innings, allowing two runs on six hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Albro went the distance on a four-hitter, allowing one unearned run with one walk and two strikeouts.
Game two featured 21 hits between the two sides, compared to 10 in the opening game, and Bates opened a 2-0 lead on a three-hit bottom of the 1
st inning.
Wesleyan answered with one run in the 2
nd as
Jordynn Killion '27 led off with a double and later came around to score on a Chappell sacrifice fly. The Cardinals looked for more in the 2
nd, with
Nicole Celi '27 and
Sophia Baez '28 reaching base with two outs for
Molly Lennon '26 who singled to left, but Celi was thrown out at home trying to score from second on the play.
Bates answered back with one run in the bottom of the 2
nd but
Ella DeCrescenzo '27 did well to escape further damage as she recorded three straight outs with two Bobcat runners in scoring position to keep the deficit at 3-1.
Kelly Baker '26 drove in Cassel-Siskind in the 3
rd with an RBI single out to left center, but Bettencourt hit back with a solo shot in the bottom half to make it 4-2 Bates.
The game continued to teeter back-and-forth with Lennon coming through with a two-out RBI double to left center to score Celi and draw the Cardinals back to within one run in the 4
th.
After generating eight hits through the first four innings, Wesleyan could only string together two hits over the final three innings of play. Bates tacked on an insurance run in the 6
th and Claire Ballard finished the job with a scoreless 7
th to secure the Bates sweep.
Lennon, Cassel-Siskind, and
Cat Palmer '26 each went 2-for-4 at the top of the lineup for Wesleyan. DeCrescenzo went 5.1 innings and allowed five runs (four earned) with no walks.
Wesleyan is back in action on Wednesday with a road doubleheader at Westfield State.
