Kwan and the Cardinals Smash Hamilton in Doubleheader Victory

CLINTON, N.Y. -  Now sitting atop the NESCAC West as they improve to 4-2 in the conference, the Wesleyan University baseball team knocked Hamilton College in a doubleheader sweep that saw Oliver Kwan '28 lead Wesleyan to a 7-4 victory in game one and a double-digit 15-4 finish in game two to snag the series 2-1.

Game one went to sophomore pitcher Shamus Kelly '28 after another striking performance for the Cardinals (8-13 overall, 4-2 NESCAC). Kelly pitched all seven innings, earning his second win of the season, dropping just four runs while allowing seven hits and one walk. Kelly's seven strikeouts tie teammate Conor Humowiecki for the most strikeouts in a game this season.

James Marsden '26 was the catalyst for the first run scored by William Moore '26 at the top of the game, singling to right center to open the line for Moore to round third and home. The Cardinals would not record another run until the fifth inning, this time running Jake Acker '27 to the plate with Matthew DeBenedictis '29 batting to right field. DeBenedictis returned his own run on the Moore double. With Marsden and Kwan on second and third after stealing both bases, Sam Henseninger's '26 RBI single placed both home.

The Cardinals cruised to a sixth run in the sixth, Tucker DeWolf '28 reaching thanks to DeBenedictis after stealing second base. The Continentals (8-11 overall, 3-3 NESCAC) finally cracked the Cardinals' lead at the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs to cut the lead in half, but the Cardinals picked up one more from Kwan in his final appearance. A fourth run was scored by the Continentals as the game closed.

The high scoring stunts of game two began in the second inning with Hensinger advancing and scoring on two wild pitches. DeWolf followed in the third, stealing second before Moore's appearance at the plate grounded to second base with enough time for DeWolf's run.

Acker kicked off the fifth inning, singling out to the short stop before reaching third with help from DeBenedictis putting a ball down the middle. DeBenedictis stole third, leaving both to score as Moore took another turn, this time putting a ball in center field. Moore earned his own run on Marsden's double on the next at bat. Marsden's run pushed the Cardinals to a 6-0 lead as Kwan doubled. The Continentals finally answered, scoring four in a row prior to the start of the seventh.

Moore was the lead off of the nine-run inning, returning his run on Marsden's double down the right line following his own double. Kwan and Hensinger walked, forcing a pitching change for the Continentals, but the action only loaded the bases as Jonah Timmons '27 was hit by William Rickens. Rickens hit two more Cardinals. Kato Mangum's '28 hit to the short stop pushed Kwan home while Acker walked on a Ricken's hit as did DeWolf. Hensinger and Timmons each advanced, dragging the count to 10 runs.

A walk for DeBenedictis gave way to another change on the mound for the Continentals, leading to Acker's run on the sacrificed fly by Moore. With a runner on all three bases as Marsden was walked, Kwan's RBI double to right center field moved Marsden, DeBenedictis, and DeWolf home for 15 total runs.

Oliver Dmochowski '27 earns the win, his first of the season, pitching four innings. Dmochowski struck out two batters without allowing a single run and just two hits.

The Cardinals return to action on Tuesday, April 7, when they host Albertus Magnus at 4 p.m.
