Guggenheim named NESCAC Rookie of the Year, Four Cardinals Earn All-NESCAC

MIDDLETOWN, CT. – Sailing on the success of a sixth NESCAC Championship title, the Wesleyan women's tennis team claimed a third NESCAC Rookie of the Year honor in the form of Agnes Guggenheim as four members of the team earned All-NESCAC honors as announced by the conference office on Wednesday, May 6.

Earning all-conference honors for the first time, Agnes Guggenheim is just the third Cardinal in program history to garner NESCAC Rookie of the Year honors, joining the ranks of national runner-up Jackie Soloveychik '27 and four-time national champion Eudice Chong '18. Guggenheim and Chong each collected triple conference honors as freshmen.

Earning First Team singles honors, Guggenheim, ranked 22nd, boasted a 16-7 overall record while running 13-6 in dual meet action. Playing primarily at No. 2 with a 9-4 campaign, Guggenheim battled at No. 1 in the wake of veteran injury with an impressive 4-1 finish. Against Top 20 ranked opponents, Guggenheim defeated MIT's Fiona Lee, now ranked at 19.

Returning to the NESCAC forefront, Epstein takes home her second career First Team Singles honors, previously earned in 2023. Returning to the lineup after a season ending injury in 2025, Epstein anchored the Cardinals at No. 1 with an 11-9 overall record and a 5-7 record in that position

Ranked 26th in the nation, Epstein faced nearly a dozen Top 20 ranked opponents, throwing down a massive victory for the Cardinals against UChicago's Anika Paul, ranked 14th.

Taking home conference honors for the first time, Lara Afolayanka was named a Second Team Singles selection with an impressive season as the primary No. 3, running 16-4 overall with an undefeated record in NESCAC play at 9-0. Afolayanka sits 12th among the national Top 20, leading all Cardinals.

Afolayanka was named an ITA Regional Doubles finalist with teammate Kendall Smith in the fall, reaching the ITA Cup in late October where the duo faced tough competition in the form of Washington University's Eleanor Archer and Caitlin Bui. Against ranked opponents, Afolayanka turned out wins over Middlebury's Gusty Beveridge, 20th, and Emory's Izzy Antanavicius, 9th.

Ranked 19th in the nation as the primary No. 2 doubles team for the Cardinals, the pair take home First Team honors for the first time as freshmen, fixing an 8-2 record through the regular season and conference tournament play. The pair dropped just two matches to Emory and WashU, but doubled back and defeated Emory's Antanavicius and Yanire Marte, ranked 6th, in the second meeting March 14. Afolayanka and Guggenheim also returned a win over #6 Kamila Wong and Ava Li of Johns Hopkins.

Epstein picks up her second NESCAC doubles honors, previously named a Second Team selection in 2024 with Soloveychik, while Lucinda Gatsiounis earns her first all-conference honors. Serving as the No. 1 pair for most of the season, the senior and sophomore pair, ranked 23rd, finished the regular season and conference action with a 7-5 overall record. Against Top 20 ranked opponents, Epstein and Gatsiounis defeated Emory's #4 pairing of Iris Berman and Emily Kantrovitz.

The Cardinals enter the NCAA Tournament for the 10th straight year on May 9 in the Second Round of the national tournament.
