A two-sport star in his playing days as a Cardinal, former All-NESCAC standout Kyle Weiss ’12 is entering his second season on the Wesleyan football coaching staff as the running backs coach in 2023. Weiss played both wide receiver and punter for the Cardinals from 2008-11 while he was also a four-year starter on the baseball team.

Weiss makes his return to Middletown having most-recently serving as an assistant coach at UConn for four seasons (2018-21). His first season was spent as the defensive quality control coach before he was promoted to running backs coach in 2019, a position he held for three seasons with the Huskies.

Prior to UConn, Weiss spent three years with the UCLA football team. He served as a graduate assistant on defense until late in 2016 when he was elevated into a linebackers coach for the 2017 Cactus Bowl. When he first came to Los Angeles, Weiss spent the 2015 season as an offensive assistant before moving to offensive quality control coach in 2016.

His first coaching role came at Pomona College in Claremont, California, where he served as an assistant football and baseball coach. Weiss spent three seasons with the Pomona football coaching staff, working as a wide receiver coach (2012-13), kicking coach (2012-13), video coordinator (2014), director of operations (2014) and quarterbacks coach (2014).

Weiss’ collegiate career saw him star for the Wesleyan football and baseball teams. He played in 23 career games for the football team, compiling 38 catches for 338 yards and 1 TD. Weiss was the Cardinals’ punter for two seasons (2009-10), earning All-NESCAC Second Team honors as a junior in 2010. During that season, he averaged 37.1 yards per punt while also leading the team in receptions (22).

In the spring at Andrus Field, Weiss was a four-year starter for the Wesleyan baseball team. Compiling 153 career hits, Weiss ranks 14th all-time at Wesleyan in career hits. Weiss sported a career .323 batting average with 22 doubles, nine triples, 62 RBI, 80 walks and 26 stolen bases in 132 games. He spent his first two seasons as the starting center fielder before moving to shortstop for his junior and senior years.

Weiss earned a bachelor of arts in earth and environmental science from Wesleyan in 2012. He went on to earn two master’s degrees, the first came in education from Arizona State University in 2015 and the second in education & information studies from UCLA in 2018.

Weiss resides in Manchester with his wife Jenna, who works at Wesleyan as an administrative assistant in athletics. The couple has one daughter, Griffin.
