Women’s Squash Defeats Conn. College and Colby, Winning the NESCAC Tournament Consolation Flight

Sydney Smith '25, Sydney Kim '22 and Aashni Parikh '22 all earn two wins on the day, finishing 3-0 on the weekend in NESCAC Tournament play

CLINTON, N.Y. – The Wesleyan women's squash team had a great day to cap their NESCAC Tournament as the Cardinals defeated Conn. College 9-0 and Colby 5-4 to win the consolation flight of the bracket on Saturday from Hamilton College. Wesleyan moves to 8-6 on the season ahead of the National Team Tournament held in Boston in two weeks.

  • The Cardinals started the day off strong with five 3-0 sweeps leading the way to a 9-0 win over the Camels
  • Portia Pliam '25, Anika Kewalramani '24, Sydney Smith '25, Annie Roach '22 and Aashni Parikh '22 each won their respective matches by 3-0 margins
  • Laila Kewalramani '24 was locked in a tight match with Rachel Matamoros at #1 as the match went into five sets, all of which were decided by four points or less. Laila won the opening set 11-9 but dropped the next two. Needing a win to prolong the match, she won the fourth set 11-9 and in the tiebreaker set, she pulled out a 11-7 win to take the match
  • Emma Smith '22 also went five sets in her match at #6 against Birgitta Quinn. Emma won the opening two sets convincingly at 11-6, 11-2 but Quinn came back to take the next two, forcing a decider. In that fifth set, Emma dug in and won 11-6 to earn the win
  • Wesleyan's 9-0 sweep was capped by Marangela James '24 and Sydney Kim '22 at #4 and #9, respectively. James won the first two sets 12-10, 13-11 before Liliana Vazquez took the third at 11-8 but the Cardinal ultimately finished off the match with a 11-6 win in the fourth. Kim also won by a 3-1 set score line with set victories coming rather handily 11-4, 11-7 and 11-3.

  • Wesleyan won a tight match against the Mules to earn the consolation flight victory, using a Pliam 3-2 win at #2 to secure the fifth point needed to secure the match
  • Sydney Smith started things off with a dominating showing at #5, defeating Juliette Love 11-4, 11-9, 11-2 as the first-year completed an undefeated weekend at 3-0 during the NESCAC Tournament play
  • Sydney Kim also won convincingly at #9 over Brigid Woelfel 11-5, 11-9, 11-5 to also finish 3-0 for the weekend
  • Parikh was the third Cardinal to finish 3-0 on the weekend as she defeated MacKenzie O'Shea 3-1 (11-3, 7-11, 11-9, 11-0) to earn another point for Wesleyan in the team leaderboard
  • Pliam then came through with the clinching point at #2 as she defeated Clara Lehv in a thrilling match that saw the Cardinal first-year come back from two sets down with 11-8, 11-4, 11-8 victories in sets three through five to seal the Cardinal wi
