Sam Musto ’24 Breaks Outdoor School Record, Leading Men’s Track & Field to 3rd Place at Trinity

Musto posted an outdoor school record time of 49.52 seconds in the 400m, taking first place in the event by a mere 0.01 seconds

HARTFORD, Conn. – Competing on a gorgeous Saturday at Trinity, the Wesleyan men's track & field team posted a third place showing out of eight teams at the Trinity Invitational. Sam Musto '24 starred on the day as he ran an outdoor school record time in the 400m. Musto not only posted a new school record, but he did so in dramatic fashion. Racing in a field of 22 competitors, Musto legged out a photo finish against Luke Chastain of Springfield, besting the runner-up by a mere 0.01 seconds to take first place in the event with a new outdoor school record time of 49.52 seconds. Musto bested the previous outdoor school record set by Kevin DeLoughry '20 in 2019 at 49.56 seconds.
 
Christian Denny '22 picked up a pair of Top 10 finishes, as he started with a third place showing in the 200m, posting a time of 22.42 seconds to finish third out of 31 sprinters. Denny also made it to the 100m finals as he finished seventh out of 29 in preliminaries with a time of 11.25 seconds. He then followed that up with a sixth place finish in the finals, crossing the line in 10.96 seconds to shave 0.29 seconds off his preliminary time.
 
Will Ruden-Sella '25 competed alongside Musto in the 400m and had a solid showing himself, posting a personal-best time of 51.03 seconds to claim fourth place in the event.
 
Wesleyan littered the leaderboard in the 800m as seven Cardinals competed in the event out of 24 total competitors. Leading the way was Ethan Walker '22 who scored a new personal-best time of 1:56.72 to finish as the runner-up by a mere 0.53 seconds behind Tobias L'Esperance-Kerckoff of Trinity. Jasper Shapiro '23 was right behind in third place, crossing the line in 1:58.49. Miles Aronow '22 also scored a Top 5 result, placing fifth with a time of 1:59.19.
 
The Cardinals also fielded several in the 1500m as five Wesleyan runners placed in the Top 10. Nate Fogarty '25 led the way with a third place finish and time of 4:00.50. Aronow claimed fourth (4:01.02) while Aidan Ward '24 was fifth with a new personal-best time of 4:01.55.
 
Aaron Foote '24 and Nigel Hayes '23 both showed well in the 400m hurdles, as Aaron Foote placed fifth overall (59.40 seconds) while Hayes finished sixth (59.60).
 
In the field events, Anish Visht '24 was second in the pole vault with a new personal-best mark of 3.70m. Noah Olsen '22 was third out of 13 in the long jump (6.41m), Javier Orellana '25 placed fourth in the shot put with a PR throw of 13.38m, Connell Oberman '22 threw 39.61m in the discus to take third place while he also took fifth in the hammer throw (37.96m).
 
Next up for Wesleyan is the NESCAC Outdoor Championships slated for Saturday, April 30 at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York.
