MALDEN RIVER – The No. 7 nationally ranked Wesleyan men's crew varsity 8 team posted a third place finish at Malden River on Saturday afternoon competing against No. 1 Bates, No. 3 Tufts and UMass.
The Cardinals 1V8 took on the Bobcats in its semifinal heat and managed a time of 6:05.03 which came in behind Bates' 5:54.91 but was ahead of the Jumbos' 6:07.83 in the other semifinal. Racing in the consolation final against UMass, Wesleyan dominated with a 13.77-second victory, clocking in at 6:05.27 in the 2,000m course compared to 6:19.04 for the Minutemen. Again, Wesleyan's time was faster than a ranked opponent, as the Cardinals' time was better than Bates' 6:05.96 achieved in the MV8 Final.
In other action, Wesleyan's 2V8 boat came up short in the semifinal heat with a 6:25.32 compared to a 6:16.16 for Bates and then in the consolation race, UMass came out on top with a 6:37.36 compared to 6:51.12 for the Cardinals. Wesleyan also fielded a 4V4 boat that posted an 8:20.58 while the Jumbos won the heat with a 7:13.28.
Wesleyan is back in action next Saturday with the Little 3 Championship held in Pittsfield, Massachusetts as the Cardinals will take on No. 1 Williams and Amherst.
