MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan women's squash team opened their 2023-24 season with a dominating 8-1 home win over Brown on Saturday afternoon from the Rosenbaum Squash Center. The Cardinals (1-0) win their second straight match against the Bears, moving to 2-6 all-time against Brown.
All eight points scored by Wesleyan in the match were via 3-0 sweeps with the quickest match coming at #7 where
Leandra Sze '26 took down Jasmine Xi 11-2, 11-1, 11-0 in just eight minutes.
Penelope Furnas '27 opened her collegiate career with a nine-minute win over Anji Friedbauer at #4, dropping just one point for the match in a near-perfect 11-0, 11-1, 11-0 victory.
Jaclyn Dichter '26,
Laila Kewalramani '24, and
Marangela James '24 dropped just four total points in their wins. Dichter took down Sydney Rains 11-2, 11-1, 11-1 at #5 while Kewalramani defeated Anna Hurd 11-0, 11-3, 11-1 at #6, while James was victorious 11-2, 11-2, 11-0 at #9 over Paloma Burgos. Each match took under 15 minutes to finish.
Aanya Anand '26 posted a 11-2, 11-2, 11-2 win at #2 over Eshanika Sreekanth Urs.
Mira Bakshi '26 defeated Zoya Unni 11-3, 11-5, 11-2 at #3 and
Julissa Mota '26 earned a 11-3, 11-2, 11-5 win over Angela Osei-Ampadu at #8 to complete the run of wins on the day for Wesleyan.
Marveya Velasquez '27 toppled Katarina Chen 11-3, 11-1, 11-2 in an exhibition match (not counting in the team scoring) at #10.
Avika Pande '26 suffered a close defeat at #1, losing 11-13, 8-11, 11-8, 9-11 against Saisha Gupta.
Wesleyan returns to the courts tomorrow morning for the first of two home matches on Sunday. The Cardinals start against No. 16 ranked Middlebury at 10 AM before hosting Vassar at 3 PM.
