No. 8 Wesleyan Places Third in the McLaughlin Cup

WORCESTER, Mass. – The No. 8 ranked Wesleyan women's crew team competed in WPI's McLaughlin Cup on Saturday morning, with the Cardinals' varsity 8 boat taking third place out of seven teams in the competition. The hosts No. 6 WPI captured the McLaughlin Cup with a first-place finish while No. 11 Smith finished in second. Wesleyan earned a spot in the final of the varsity 8 race, qualifying with a time of 6:57.6 that was fourth-best out of seven teams in the preliminary. In the finals later in the morning, the Cardinals were third-fastest to the finish line with a time of 7:00 as the Engineers captured first (6:55.8), just in front of No. 11 Smith (6:57.6) while No. 10 Hamilton (7:02.3) was third and No. 5 Clark (7:08.86) landed in fifth.
 
In the 2nd varsity 8 competition, Wesleyan's boat dominated as the Cardinals were fastest in the preliminary race by nearly 13 seconds, crossing the line in 7:00.2 In the finals, the Cardinals again dominated as their time of 7:04.1 was easily best in the competition, head of runner-up Hamilton (7:13.55).
 
Wesleyan's 3rd varsity 8 boat was narrowly edged out by Smith by a margin of just 0.42 seconds. Wesleyan finished in 7:19.32 compared to Smith's time of 7:18.9.
 
Next up for Wesleyan is a trip to the Malden River where the Cardinals will face Tufts, Bates, and Wellesley on Saturday, April 15.
